    Hello Guys!

I recently moved to Ireland! :)
I lived in Austria and we had actually very good Dentists there.

I sadly don't know how it works here in Ireland.
Does it go with your Healthcare or do you have to pay with your private money? How much does it cost and also what does the dentist do?

In my case, i have a lot of holes to repair/fill :(
I am terrified of dentist since i was a child. (bad memories...)

I am trying to find someone who is really good at its work.

    What i mean is:
    - that it doesn't ruin your teeth in the way the look (like putting in silver fillings in it and the entire teeth looks so bad and ugly that you don't wanna smile anymore) :(
    - that everything holds when it is fixed, i mean with the filling, i dont wanna eat gum and then it fills
    - when its fixed then its fixed, i mean with that if i have endodontic treatmen or dunno how its correctly called root treatment
    - always injection (paralyze) no pain (also after the work is done) !!! D:

I dunno how i can describe that, but maybe it helps when i say how it works in Austria.
My old dentist did 3 root treatments for me. First there way X-Ray so she can check whats wrong with the teeth. Then she used like, maybe 3 injections (sometimes 4) to paralyze the root and teeths so i don't feel anything at all (also kinda funny feeling that your mouth feels totaly numb and you drool all over the place haha). Then she starts drilling all the nasty stuff out of there. She fixed the teeth in within maybe 20 min and did so much stuff to my teeth i can't even tell xD
So much drilling, cleaning, putting stuff on it, even burned something to put it in my teeth and fixed it without problem.
After that i did not have to pay anything (you pay only for the injection if you want to for filling a little hole). The cost my healthcare took care.

I have Quinn Healthcare as my Health Insurance.
I live near Blackpool in Cork.

Hi, like you I was terrified of them, had never visited a dentist as an adult despite pain every now and then. I went to one a few months ago as the pain got too b
ad. I can honestly say it was not bad at all and I have no fear about my next check up in 3 months time. The guy I went to is Sean twom e y in the Lough, I paid as my health insurance does not cover dental work.

If you're in Blackpool, go to the Medicus Medical Centre. It's a Polish clinic, but the staff speak english. The dentist there is amazing, and trained to a very high standard.

He x rayed all of my teeth and said I needed 3 filling s, also cleaned them, took 3 visits overall, on the first visit he put a temporary filling in the tooth that was paining me, never felt a thing really aside from the injection which was more of a hotness than pain.

Yeah i go to the same guy as RoverJames....he's top notch.

And what you are saying about the silver fillings. The white fillings are generally only used for small cavities that need filling as apparently the silver ones work much much better where there are large holes. So which ones you get really depend on how bad the cavities are. And get onto your health insurer to see if they do cover you or not.

He is well sound, not like the animals I visited when I was in primary school

He put a humongous white filling in my troublesome tooth, initially he put in a temporary filling with the intention of pulling it or doing a root canal. After he did the other 2 fillings (small tiny ones) and cleaned the rest of the teeth over two visits nearly 2 months had past. I had absolutely no pain in the troublesome tooth and and opted for a root canal instead of pulling it. He proprosed trying a permanent filling (highlighting that the issue could flare up again but that I might get away with it, if it flares up he said he can then do a root canal) I said why not so he filled it, nice big white filling :) Now maybe there is silver in there too but the surface is white anyway.

I reckon I'll be in to him before Christmas or in January, the time is flying. Not at all dreading it :D

Not anymore, the white can be used now for everything. I got my silver ones replaced by white in Poland last year.

yes but the white ones are weaker so prepare to have them re-done in a few years.
Anyway, OP you should get better advice here at Dental Issues

Thank you for all the advice!

I will try out RoverJames Dentist. I hope he can understand my fear and my english haha (i aint that good in english).

What about root treatment? I keep on hearing they take out the whole teeth and replace it.
Why? Austria Dentist just drill out the bad stuff in the teeth and take out the nerves in it and then fill out the teeth with silver/or white stuff.

Oh yeah, since i recently (1 month ago) is it possible to do anything about payment.
I sadly don't have much money right now and i have really no idea how much it cost and i get my first payroll next week :(
but yah i already have a lil pain in my teeth. Is it possible to make a bill or anything so i can pay as soon as i get my first payroll?

I aint no dentist but root canal is the same here as it is anywhere. They drill into your tooth, scrape out all the bad stuff and then fill it up pretty much. In theory they are killing the nerve in your tooth so basically killing the tooth but it wont fall out etc etc.

Ive always paid cash on visit but im sure in this day and age the dentists could come up with some sort of payment plan for you if you require it. Best off just to ring them up.

You might not need any root canal treatment, go for a check up and see what you need doing. Might only need a filling. From my experience you honestly have nothing to fear so don't worry about it.

AFAIK, the compounds used in the white fillings are much more advanced now than they were a few years back. Root canals aren't done on the continent much anymore either. I needed one according to a Cork dentist (You'd think my teeth are falling out of my head with all this work being mentioned, but they're actually grand!), and my Polish dentist scoffed 'Root canal, what is this, the dark ages?' or something similar. They drill down to the nerves, put in a toxin to kill the nerve, and seal it all back up again. Took 30 mins flat once I'd been aneasthetised, and cost 25 Euro. Not a moment's bother since.

    Ceril,

    How did you get on?

I'm due a visit to the Dentist myself and wanted to hear if the recommendation was a success?

Is that not a root canal ? I assume you got this done in Poland and not here?

Painful dentristry is a thing of the past, I'v just returned from John Foley in Ballyvolane (10p.m. last night) 1 extraction & 1 front filling totally painless, highly recommened.

How is that different from root canal, sounds the same.

Also you had to get to Poland. Apart from the cost of that, theres all the time it took to get there and back.

25 is very cheap for that though.

How did they knock you out? It wasn't a general was it?

and 30 mins is a really really short time to do a successful root filling. specialists will spend that amount of time just irrigating the canal with bleach to kill the bugs. it has to be filled after that.

people in cork who want cheaper dentistry should go to the dental hospital. it may take longer, but the work done is top quality.

Have been going to John Foley in Ballyvolane for years, he's a gent, makes you totally feel relaxed.

How did you get on Lennox?

How did you get on Lennox?

    Putting the 25min wait aside.
He was fine & it was very quick too, although it was just a check up.

I have another appointment with him in early Feb for some repair work on a filling, that will be the test (which I'm not looking forward to). I'll report back after that visit.

John Foleys app. times are a bit of a joke, but his work is A1.

High speed it not a good quality to judge a dentist by. A bit of time spent doing even a cleaning is a good thing.

he was the most meticulous demonstrator on the clinic in UCC. any time he was overseeing us we were the last people out of the hospital. timing is secondary to everything else with him. you can be sure that waiting for your appointment is worth it tbh.

following tmj work , re aligining my jaws, i need approx 6- 8 crowns. Ive been quoted €1,000 per crown . i have delayed about 9 months now as tbh its just too much money. anyone any better prices on crowns ? i was keen to stay with the guy to has done all the work for me as i feel he is best aquainted with my needs but it will come down to price now.

All crowns are not equal, there are good ones, bad ones and mediocre ones. Low price and high quality rarely come hand in hand.
