Fixed term contract confusion

Why do employers offer fixed term contracts for a duration of more than four years? If I understand the legislation correctly these contracts would turn into contracts of indefinite duration after four years, and that if the role is obsolete a redundancy situation can arises in any case. Is there a trick with these contracts?

Is it legal for the employer to make an employee redundant during a fixed term contract (apart from probationary period)?

    Thanks.

The time term of the contract is completely bogus. They can make you redundant or fire you at any time.

Employers just like to put those years in the contract to give you a false sense of permanence.

The contract may as well be written on toilet paper.

    Thanks for the reply.

I find it incredible that citizens information etc go into great detail about the renewal of fixed term contract and fail to mention that fixed term contract are not exactly fixed term.

fixed term is as it states, but after four years you have to be by law make you permanent!!!!!!

after 102 weeks of service if the employer lets you go then you are entitled to statutory redundancy!!!

Also after the 102 weeks were the employer is letting you go because the contract in coming to an end, it is by law a dismissal so unfair dissmal act will apply, also if the employer lets you go because your contract is ending and because you are a contract worker it is counted a unfair dismissal again as you can not be treated less favorable than a permanent one

the problem is people dont know there rights and unions could not be arsed to fight your side.

call NERA as they are very helpful
