Weak Signal with new modem - help!

    Hi All,

    We were having problems with our old modem and eircom have just given us a new replacement that's the Zyxel 660. We had an ancient Netopia one before and signal strength was always 5 bars. With the new one, we're lucky if we get three bars if we're standing beside the modem with the laptop and upstairs the desktop can't pick up any signal at all.

    Have read online that changing the channel may help but we're not sure how to do that! Does anyone have experience with this modem that can help us??

    Thanks!:)

    Before you do this download a program called INSSIDER. Google it, it's a free download. Install and run it. Must be run on a wireless device.

    This will tell you what other channels are being used in your area. This is crucial to selecting a free channel. Someone on ur channel will interfere with you wireless.

    If you have an iPhone, wififofum does the same thing.

    To change channel: Go to ur web browser and type in http://192.168.1.1

    This should bring up a log in password request.
    Username = admin
    Password = 1234

    This should get you in.
    Go to the wireless tab on the left and in there somewhere should be the option to change wireless channel. 1or 11 normally works pretty well.

    Also, there should be a setting in there for tx power. Make sure it's at 100%.

    Thanks Kenny!

    Downloaded INSSIDER and only one other person connected to the same channel. Is one enough to make that much of a a difference?

    Cant access the link you posted either? Is that for Eircom or does it matter what provider you use?

    Ya sorry...sandy savage is right. Type in ur web browser. That's for eircom alright.

    One person on the sane channel is enough to weaken ur signal .

    Hope this helps
