Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Anyone know a decent site where I can get a list of upcoming sportives for the next 6 months? Would like to do a bit of planning with the events. Thanks for your help in advance. :)

I doubt there is much, if anything in Ireland after September until March at the earliest. But ya never know.

This is from the wiki... looking quiet tbh, it'll be mtb season soon:cool:

There is an audax event listed in the calendar, organised by one of the posters here (rottenhat.)

OCTOBER 30th Dying Light 200 Starting in Phibsboro at 08.00hrs Organiser Orwell Wheelers Contact Eoghan at 087 684 0615 oldrottenhat@gmail.com

Note with audax events you need to be self-supporting and the turn-out out of season could be as low as four. Last year there were some audax events in the middle of the winter IIRC.

Can recommend the Castlecomer 100k (last year was first one). It's run by the same team as the Tour de Kilkenny. Extremely well run with good food provided. Fingers crossed on the weather.

Fermoy Cycling Club is hosting the Tour of the Knockmealdowns this Sunday 26th.
Start time is 10am, entry fee €10. (€10 for a one day licence if you dont have one).
Below is a map of the route.

    http://beta.mapmyride.com/route/detail/23234378/?open_ive_done=1

Like last year the pace will be controlled until Lismore, then you can ride as fast as you want up the Vee. :D
Light refreshments in Colgheen, before starting on the trip back through Mitchelstown.

The David McCall Sportive is this Sunday, departing Hillsborough Co Down. Hits some of the big hills in the Mournes including the Spelga Dam, should be a cracker and a great cause. 80km and 110km routes.

The route is : Baltinglass, Hacketstown,Tinahely, Aughrim, Aghavannagh, Rathdangan and back to Baltinglass for refreshments in the hospital !!

Looks a little hilly on the way back :(

Was there ever any thought given to having an 'Events' sticky here as they have in the A/R/T Forum? It works well over there. The Cycling Ireland calendar people are referred to ocassionally here doesn't list a lot of events that people might be interested in doing.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Regional South East Moderators Posts: 11,393 Mod ✭✭✭✭Captain Havoc

My own personal view is that we have enough stickies as it is. To be fair the CI calendar is grand and most others get a mention here, either by people in the organising clubs or by people doing it which I feel is more than adequate.

not to disagree with the modester but I like the idea of sticky/sub forum for events, it can be easy to miss an announcment for an event when only posted on the main board.... I'm just saying is all.

I maybe up for the Fermoy cycle, anyone else here thinking of doing it or have done it before?

You are entitled to your view regardless of how indefensible it maybe.
This forum had become one of the goto sites for cycling in Ireland.

As such I am of the opinion that a sticky containing info on upcoming events should be created.
    Propose that:
1 each post contains only salient details, link to website and link to boards discussion thread if any.
2 no duscusion permitted. Its only an event advert.

The CI calendar is not sufficient. Many of the events that I attended were not mentioned there.

I really don't understand this almost ideological opposition to an events sticky.
Everytime it has been brought up the mods have said no.

Hi guys, can we put the discussion of stickies on hold for the moment please (as in don't open a thread on it) and also keep this thread on track as a source of information on upcoming sportives.

Can I just say that stickies don't solve everything, information still gets buried and lost in them, people tend to ignore them (i.e. cycling wiki FAQ doesn't seem to get a look in for all the "what lock?" threads, etc.) and they end up cluttering the front page.

On the subject of sportives, there aren't really many between now and the start of next season, at least none on the scale of the An Post series or the Mt.Leinster challenge. Winter doesn't tend to be the nicest time for sportives with the changing weather and shorter days.

Not serious at all here, but maybe we could get a turbo trainer sportive going with all the usual grub and socialising, lay out the cakes in front of the bikes with promises of "only 100km more to go before cake!" while the organizers sit down at the table and begin munching in front of the panting cyclists.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,831 ✭✭✭ROK ON

@ Dirk. That's a really good idea. Could it be a preamble to Xmas drinks?

It is a pity that there aren't more sportifs between now and year end. In the uk for example, sportifs are pretty much a year round affair.

Some enterprising club could do well out of a winter sportif. Shorter routes obviously, maybe 60 and 120km as opposed to the normal 100/160km.
Soup and hot choc at finish.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,565 ✭✭✭thebouldwhacker

don't open a thread on it

The power has gone to his head!! :)
Plenty of time to sort something out by christmas, I have a few ideas but I guess now aint the time.

Back on thread: It might be end of season for roadies but only starting for mtb and there is a thread about a mountain meet if anyone is looking for an event....

Nah Castlewellan Hill is the warmup act for Spelga Dam (if doing the full route). Apart from those the rest of the route is pretty rolling.

I'm undecided between it or the Paul McKibben which is on the same day:

I maybe up for the Fermoy cycle, anyone else here thinking of doing it or have done it before?
Short story: I did this route yesterday, there was a good turnout. Nice scenic route, personally satisfied, loved the 'feed' afterwards :)
Long story: This was only my 2nd 'sportif' ever, the 1st being the SKT 90km. Its a good scenic route, not too long (85km). I had heard it was going to be 'easy' as far as Lismore, but still I'd say we covered it in 30+km/h, but with such a large group, it seemed comfortable. I got chatting to a Galway girl and she amazed at the amout of 'pit-stops' (ie. piss stops), the poor girl couldn't look left or right :o:D
After we hit Lismore, we hit the Vee climb, its 12km, it was every man/woman/group for themselves, I got into a rhythm and I think I stayed around the 20km/h mark. The descent down the Vee into Clogheen is nice, curvy, fast-ish scenic route. There was a stop here for some grub and I headed off with some 'seasoned pros' and managed to stay with them until Ballyporeen, and then they dropped me :o, but I struggled on (luckily there was no head wind). When I got to Mitchelstown I saw a group of people standing around, and when I approached I saw 2/3 people lying on the ground (in a bad way), I hope they are all OK  The climb out of Mitchelstown up to GloccaMora pub is a little tester, but again I settled into a gear and motored up. At the top I looked behind to see a group approaching and I tagged along for the downhill spin into Fermoy, where tea/sandwiches/sausage-rolls/cakes/tarts/biscuits etc awaited us............yummy :D
Oh...........I did it in 3 hours, 28.3km/h, well happy with that.

There was a great turn out yesterday on the Fermoy CC, Tour of the Knockmealdowns.
So thanks to everyone who participated.
We thought we had kept the pace reasonable until Lismore. Next year we will have a look at trying to keep the average about 28K until Lismore.

Unfortunately there was a crash a few miles before Mitchelstown, where one participant needed to be taken a way by ambulance.
The report I have is that he sustained 4 broken ribs. This is a great shame as the fellow in question who is in his seventies and one of the greatest adverts cycling could ever have.
Hopefully he will make a speedy recovery.

Defo going to do this one, any idea of the type of route, is there much hill work?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,808 ✭✭✭Stokolan

Was at the fermoy one myself. Have to say it was a nice spin. The vee was Longer then expected but enjoyable. At 85k its just long enough for me, any longer and I would have suffered. Took me 3 hours 17 min. Which I'm well happy with as I havent been doing enough cycling this year.

Ride with gps link for anyone thinking of doing it next year http://ridewithgps.com/trips/111265

I'm glad to hear that the man who had the accident is not too serious. At first I heard it was a hearth problem. Hope he makes a fast recovery.

Looking forward to the castlecomer one to finish off the year with.

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned already but there is a Sportive in Athlone this weekend. The Falling Leaves Cycle Tour is on the Sunday (3rd of October) starting from Buccaneers Rugby Club. There are 3 routes, 30km, 70km & 130km. Entry fee is €15 in aid of ICHPT.
    More info here... http://www.shannonsidecc.com/wordpress/
I'm not involved in the club or running of the event but I'm going to do the 70km as my first event.

Will have the exact details of the route tomorrow evening I'm told. Was just talking to the organizer there. Sorry about the delay on getting it up. The reason there is nothing on the net is there is the club have no website, something I must mention and see if I can sort over the winter.

I was only out around that area myself over the weekend, being from Slane myself. I passed a couple of lads on bikes and didn't get to stop to chat, I was in a rush to get home and get other things started. So if you're on here I'll apologise. If I'm about on the 17th I'll head over to it myself, though I won't be looking forward to that killer of a winding climb just before Collon, it gets me every time. I wasn't aware of too much interest in cycling around the area as I haven't seen too many around any time I'm out.

Anyway, hopefully I'll see a few of you over the weekend.

At the moment the members come from a wide ish area, some of the key people in the club are from Adree but work in the area and others like myself are from Kilberry direction (but live in Dublin)! So if your in the area and fancy joining a group maybe think about going for a couple of spins with them!

The club did a charity spin earlier in the year from Sligo back to the Sally, 190KM, think there was about 20 of them and all did it in a respectable time too! They try to attend a couple of the sportives together during the year, the Tour of Louth, Tour of Meath etc. They go out most Sunday mornings as well.

I look forward to seeing you there so, I'll be the guy on the Wilier bike so come say hello!

As many as possible is the short answer. But don't know to be honest would think around the 30-40 mark at the moment but could be over 50. I'm in Dublin and haven't been talking to the organisers in a couple of weeks, hence the vague answer!
