If I was to externally repeat a subject where I only have to go sit the exam in may will that stop me getting JSA? Since I am external I would not be registered as part of the college and wouldn't have a student card so am I still considered a student? It's literally just 3 hours in may so it wouldn't affect me looking for a job.

No you can still claim. But would advise you are upfront and tell them straight off. Get a letter from the college stating you won't be attending lectures, and will just be sitting the exam, and everything will be fine.

    (f) Third level examination only students :

It is considered inappropriate to disqualify students who are only registered to sit examinations (i.e. are not attending an Institution of education). These are mostly repeat year students registered for examinations only but also include persons studying at night and those following Open University courses. Such persons are not disqualified for receipt of JA under Section 148 of the Social Welfare Act 2006. However, these students must continue to satisfy the availability/ GSW conditions.
