Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Broken strap button

    Hi lads,

    The screw for the strap button on the neck side of my LP copy has sheared off, leaving most of the screw in the hole and about a millimetre proud of the wood. I can't get it out.

    I was thinking either it would need to be bored out, or I could just get a new one fitted beside it. About half an inch or less up the bout away from the neck would be the place.

    Do you think that fitting a new button (involving using a manual hand drill) is something I should attempt myself? I'm not a carpenter, but I'm not a fool either...

    If you are drilling yourself, put insulating tape over the area you are drilling so not to chip the varnish. Use a slow speed, low power setting on your drill and take your time.

    I'm sure for a few pounds a local carpenter could do it if you felt uneasy about it

    It can be removed with a screw removal tool. (who'd have thunk it! :pac:)
    After that you should fill the hole with toothpicks and glue. When that sets you can redrill and screw back in the strap button.

    The screw originally broke (entire head sheared off) as I was putting it back in after doing the toothpicks-and-glue thing because the screw wasn't gripping.

    By "screw removal tool", are you talking about something like this?

    Ah right, yeah you probably should have replaced the screw. Yeah, that'd be it. :)
    You could possibly find them cheaper if you look.

    Jaysus! Hadn't even looked at the price of those things! That was just the first illustration that google threw up.

    I know a couple of people with the tools and ability to do it. Couldn't be ar$ed doing it myself.

    I think I'd prefer to have the button replaced in its original position, and since I was thinking about getting a broken tone pot replaced with a killswitch anyway, I think I'll just bring it to A Man.
