Seriously? You think it costs less to rent Croke Park than the Aviva? LOL

Yes, because that's what I said. Do you enjoy debating strawmans?

I'm assuming the tickets would cost less for Croker, as its a bigger stadium then Aviva, so if the game is well publicised and the demand is high enough the ticket prices are likely to be lower in Croker then in Aviva. Regardless, the ticket prices in Aviva are going to be very high which doesn't help the growth of American Football in Ireland.

I may of course be enitrely mistaken, but debating strawmans and being patronising in reply to me doesn't help.

Why is it every time Lansdowne(Aviva) is mentioned with other events people rope in the FAI and IRFU as the ones setting tickets prices.

Please point out where I said that the FAI/ IRFU set ticket prices in the Aviva stadium.

Thats a very fine post btw, but again, you argued against something I never stated.

I do apologise but usually when people complain about ticket prices in Ireland the FAI and IRFU are among the posts :D

But I will ask you have you ever been to a college game in the US? Ticket prices there for D1 colleges can range from $20 to $90 for standard seats. Take the Wolverines in Michigan 100,000+ seater stadium and these are their home ticket average at $60 if you can get them. Boston College games 45,000 seater stadium $35 to $65 depending on seat. Bearing in mind 40 and lower are nose bleeds. These colleges are out to profit when they sell tickets. The point is stadium size is irrelevant to cost. It is more supply and demand and how much they can get away pricing these tickets.

As for helping American Football in Ireland I don't think that is their ultimate goal as some would lead you to believe. As they play each other every year and its a long standing rivalry and played in Neutral Venues a lot, I would see it as a chance to repeat 1996 game in Croker. Sure it promotes the game here to some extent but Im sure its more about a tradition.

To be honest between the UK Ireland and Alumni traveling from all over Europe and the US the Aviva will sell out. I would be very surprised if that game wasn't a sell out.

    Clearly

Ticket prices were going to be high regardless of where it was held. Giving that the last US College game in Dublin was poorly attended, I don't think they could base the decision on where it was to be held on selling 80,000 in Croke Park.

I'd imagine 45,000 is their aim. Given that Lansdowne costs far less to rent, its clear why it was chosen (ie to keep costs down, and keep ticket prices down).
I may of course be enitrely mistaken, but debating strawmans and being patronising in reply to me doesn't help.

If you're going to complain about being fleeced on prices that haven't even been set (and comapre them to a mythical game in another stadium), then I'm going to patronise you.

Good win for the Irish today against 14th-ranked Utah. First victory over a ranked team since 2006. Has the bleeding stopped? Who knows - but I'm just going to enjoy this one. Kelly went to a more ball-controlled offense to protect the freshman quarterback and it worked. Defense played well. Army (and its option attack) is up next at Yankee Stadium. Get that win and we'll be bowl-eligible. Then on to SC.

Jack, I have no idea how many bowls are being played this year. Obviously, most are meaningless (except to the participating teams fans - even then its debatable if the fans care more about the outcome of the bowl game or more about the bowl-week weather!).

For most teams (including ND this year), outside of the potential revenue garnered in a bowl game, the extra 15 days of practice allowed by the NCAA for bowl-participants is hugely beneficial. In past years, a 6-6 ND team would likely turn down a bowl invitation. If ND gets to 6 wins this year, it very likely would not turn down a bowl bid.

35 Bowls all together. 5 of them are BCS games.

I just had a quick look on Wikipedia and apparently there are 120 Division 1 teams playing football at the moment. With 70 bowl places, that's over half the teams. Surely the honour of playing in a bowl game is somewhat diminished when just about anyone who hasn't ben walked over all year gets in?

i thought there was 127 might be wrong though. even still its a joke. 20 bowl games would be plenty IMO theres no prestige in it anymore

only the BCS bowls have prestige. The others are just an extra game where the colleges can make a bit of money

ND used to have a policy of only accepting one of the big 4 (at the time)

I was talking pre BCS. if I had a magic want bowl games would be gone anyway.

If you could just erase history, rivalries etc and build a div1 football structure from scratch Id do it like this.

Change div 1 to 8 16 team divisions each with 2 conferences.

you play everybody in your division plus one team from the other conference on a rotation basis.

16 division winners get into the NC playoff.

losers play each other each week to determine 8 - 16th place rankings etc etc

extroploate to all the second place teams, 3rd place teams etc

Every team in Div 1 plays 12 games, each team gets a final ranking.

    If only ...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,330 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

Final ranking doesn't bother me. No difference between 6th and 12th IMO

Only thing that bothers me is the yearly dispute over who the national champion is.

Top 8 in ranks should go through to play offs IMO 1v8, 2v7, 3v6, 4v5
Bracket them into a National championship final. Job done

id take a freaking and one game right now. If Auburn make it to the NC game its a travesty, the SEC is having a down year by its very lofty standards. I genuinely believe Boise would beat them.

The marketing push for The Emerald Isle Classic has begun:

    http://www.emeraldisleclassic.com/

Some hope resurrected the past couple of weeks with the win versus a good Utah team and a convincing win over Army. This week's game against our arch-rival USC will be telling. We haven't beaten USC in our last eight attempts. Neither of the teams are having stellar years, yet no one can deny USC's talent level.

Which USC team will show up to play Saturday: The team that gave a strong Stanford team all it wanted and beat a top-20 Arizona team or the team that got blown out by a 4-5 Oregon State team last week.

Which ND team will show up: The team that beats a top-20 Utah team or the team that loses to Tulsa.

Given it's ND-USC, I'm thinking both will bring their A-game. While my heart says ND, my head (and the past eight years) says it's USC.

    Go Irish!

    Sun Bowl result:

    ND 33 Miami 17

Certainly Miami is a team in transition, but they have several players who will be playing on Sunday. A good win for ND. After ND's loss to Tulsa (who likely will end up in the Top 25 after their destruction of Hawaii in their bowl game), staring at a record of 4-5, few thought ND would go on to win their last four games (including wins against a then-ranked Utah, USC and now Miami). I must admit, after severely doubting coach Brian Kelly following the Tulsa loss, my optimism for the future has been renewed.

Here's to ND finishing recruiting on a positive note. This win, hopefully, will help secure some strong prospects. If ND continues on this trajectory, Aviva Stadium may be seeing a team primed for a solid BCS run come 2012. Here come the Irish!

we can now say Notre Dame are coming NEXT YEAR

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 223 ✭✭cheesehead

As I'm in a posting mood tonight, I thought I'd update all the boards.ie Notre Dame football fans regarding football recruiting.

Notre Dame did very well on the recruiting trail this year. Finishing the season strongly (plus a bowl win) certainly helped Coach Brian Kelly and staff reel in some very fine recruits.

Many consider the incoming recruiting class (2011) to be the strongest defensive class recruited since the Bryant Young class of 1990. Four players in the defensive front seven (Aaron Lynch, Ishaq (pronounced E-shock) Williams, Steve Tuitt and Ben Councell) were sought after by the top programs in the country. If recruiting assessments hold, the folks in Aviva Stadium will likely be seeing at least four future defensive NFL players come September 2012. Combined with top nose-tackle Louis Nix from the class of 2010, ND should have a very solid defensive front seven coming into 2012. There is guarded optimism among Irish fans heading into 2011, with even greater expectations for 2012 if the 2011 season goes as planned.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 144 ✭✭bobo the clown

Also Troy Niklas and Matt Hegarty help the problems of their offensive line. I think the timing of the game is perfect. With this years class and the potential of a similar class of 2012. They could be at the beginning of a strong era. With the prospect of seeing players of NFL calibre. As long as prices are moderate

Well, they wouldn't have been playing it on September 1st there.

I agree with the choice of Aviva Lansdowne Road though. I'd much prefer a sold out out 50,000 than 50,000 in croke park.

I wouldn't see 80,000 turning up no matter what the prices are set as. Hopefully the game will sell out.

Who knows though but they would have known the date of the game when they were offered the stadium. Just some inside infomation on the Navy Notre Dame game in 2012 at the Aviva.

The GAA themselves chose not to cater to the game, silly they did not put more effort into it. That discussion is for another day.

Both Navy & Notre Dame agreed to have the game in Aviva, based on the what it offered.

This game in it self will host more than just the big game. There will be approx 1000-3000 Americans. Including but limited to players, supporters, etc, joining the Spectacular events!

I myself am excited beyond the stars, that my fellow Americans are coming to Ireland despite, well you know.............
The Trim Bulldogs are excited as well, as it will gain Irish American football organizations so much good exposure!
I have been speaking to several people in the states associated with the event, & they as well are excited about it. Tourism will have a new name after the big day in 2012. "Irish American football" !!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Positive gets positive

Notre Dame had its Spring Game today. As most would agree, one takes Spring Game results/player performances with a grain of salt.

That said, Notre Dame just might be turning this thing around after 15 years of mediocrity (or worse). There was much talent out on the field today. The freshman defensive lineman, Aaron Lynch, looked particularly tough. He should be able to contribute this season to what should be a pretty solid defense.

Perhaps a nine win season this year (maybe more if we catch some breaks and Michael Floyd - standout wide receiver currently suspended from team - gets back into good graces).

If this up-coming season does pan out and ND continues with solid recruiting, ND might well be back in annual BCS title contention in the up-coming years, including 2012.

I think the Ryder cup, especially that year when it was in Ireland for the first time has more national and international significance than a regular season college football game between two non-contending teams (probably)

Fair point, but there is a bit of a difference switching dates for a different sport to be played on the same field than there is for switching a date in the interest of public safety with all the crowds that were going to be on the roads that weekend had both been on at the same time.

3 high school games and 1 DIII game on the Friday. They have been looking at a few of Dublin's Stadiums.

    http://www.facebook.com/GIFT2012?sk=wall#!/note.php?note_id=182069618512160
Two more top U.S. high school football programs – Notre Dame Preparatory from Scottsdale, Arizona and Philadelphia’s Father Judge High School – have joined the list of teams heading to Dublin to play their 2012 regular season opening game in Ireland on Friday, August 31.

The schools will participate in GIFT 2012 – the Global Ireland Football Tournament - and will play in one of three double headers during the same weekend as the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the U.S. Naval Academy Midshipmen meet in Dublin, Ireland on September 1, 2012.

Specific details of the venue and additional high schools taking part in GIFT 2012 will be announced soon. Organizer Global Football previously announced that two top Division III college football programs would be part of the football bonanza when John Carroll University and St. Norbert College take the field. At the high school level, Notre Dame High School (Sherman Oaks, CA) and Hamilton High School (Chandler, AZ) will face off along with Loyola Academy (Wilmette, IL) and Dallas Jesuit (TX).

Texas-based Global Football will produce the series of American football games, which will be the focal point of a five-day educational football tour to the Emerald Isle. The high school and college programs will be drawn from across the United States and will put in two practice sessions prior to their games, along with numerous local area tours to historic and cultural sites, culminating in attending the Notre Dame-Navy game in Aviva Stadium.

Led by Coach Scot Bemis, Notre Dame Prep won back-to-back Arizona Class 4A Division II championships in 2007 and 2008. In 2008, the team defeated Santa Rita 30-26. After an early departure from the 2009 playoffs, Notre Dame Prep just missed out on the championship in 2010 losing a heartbreaking 49-48 game to Williams Field. Coach Bemis has been at the helm since 2002 and holds a 54-20 overall record.

“We have always run Notre Dame Prep based on the philosophy that the curriculum transcends the classroom,” said Notre Dame Prep principal David Gonsalves. “I believe this trip to Ireland is another opportunity for our students to learn through a cultural exchange between our two countries.”

Notre Dame Prep will line up against Philadelphia’s Father Judge High School’s football team led by head coach Tom Coyle who enters his twelfth season at the helm. The football program, which competes in the Philadelphia Catholic 4-A league, has won five championships (1964, 1975, 1981, 1983, 1984) and most recently reached the championship game in 2008.

“I know that our student athletes are very anxious to visit the country of Ireland and our school community is happy that these young men will share in this wonderful experience,” said Coach Coyle. “We are confident that our football players will compete on the playing field. More importantly, this entire experience will remain with our young men long after they depart from Ireland and eventually graduate from Father Judge High School.”

Global football President Patrick Steenberge said of the event: “Adding historic Father Judge of Philadelphia and the relatively new Notre Dame Prep of Scottsdale to this groundbreaking tournament is extremely gratifying. In talking with Coach Coyle and Coach Bemis, as well as the administrators at both these quality schools, they are fired up about this opportunity to take their teams and broader communities to Dublin.

“They are also thrilled to be able to challenge their student athletes to travel internationally, to learn about Ireland, and to stay focused enough to play at a very high level against an opponent. Arizona vs. Pennsylvania, in Ireland! It doesn’t get much better.”

Marching bands, cheer squads and alumni groups are also gathering forces to put on a true ‘Dublin Friday Night Lights’ celebration in multiple stadiums.

Steenberge has been working with the Irish American Football Association (IAFA) to make GIFT 2012 a reality. The IAFA organizes and develops the sport of American Football in Ireland and currently boasts a ten-team league, the Irish American Football League. The Championship Game Shamrock Bowl XXV is due to take place in Tallaght Stadium in late July. Visit www.americanfootball.ie for more information.

Travel arrangements for the Global Ireland Football Tournament 2012 are being handled by Anthony Travel, which has partnered with Global Football for more than a decade. Travel details for alumni, fans and family can be found at www.GIFT2012.com

Global Football President Patrick Steenberge lettered two seasons at quarterback for Notre Dame, 1970-’71, and his Texas-based company has produced American football games in 18 different countries since 1996. He also created the Notre Dame Football Fantasy Camp in 2003, in partnership with the ND Monogram Club, produced the Notre Dame Japan Bowl led by Coach Lou Holtz in 2009, and in May 2011 will produce the first American football game on African soil, the Global Kilimanjaro Bowl (www.kilibowl.com) featuring Drake University and the Mexico CONADEIP all-stars.

About Notre Dame Preparatory football, Scottsdale, AZ:

Notre Dame’s athletic programs continue to flourish with the many impressive accomplishments of their teams under the direction of the school’s staff of dedicated coaches including Football head coach Scot Bemis who led the program to two state championships in 2007 and 2008 and hold a 54-20 overall record. Coach Bemis has also received recognition being named 2007 Friday Night Fever Arizona High School Coach of the Year, 2008 East Valley Tribune Coach of the Year, and named Scottsdale Republic Coach of the Year in both 2007 and 2008.

About Father Judge football, Philadelphia, PA:

Father Judge High School is a Roman Catholic high school. It was established in 1954 by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia and is run by the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales. The football program competes in the Philadelphia Catholic League 4A and has won five PCL championships; 1964, 1975, 1983, 1984. Tom Coyle was named head coach in 2001, a title he still holds today. Coyle graduated from Father Judge in 1987. He is also the Admissions Director at the high school.

Hope to get to all of these games. Long way for the high school kids to travel, and while I'm sure they'll enjoy the novelty of a trip abroad, I think it's important for anyone who can to get to these games to (a) show support and appreciation of their efforts to promote the sport over here, and (b) encourage them to come more often ;)
