    How do i find what web technology is used on different websites?

    No conclusive way to do it. You can only check for clues (like the HTTP headers in the server response might mention the Java container, or that it's IIS, etc.), URL file extensions (e.g. .aspx) or within the HTML source (like the generator META tag).

    if you can give some examples of what level of detail your looking for it might help.

    www.netcraft.com can provide some details on that a website is run on.

    http://toolbar.netcraft.com/site_report?url=http://www.boards.ie is the report for boards.ie and it shows that its running on lighttpd/1.4.28

    builtwith.com seems pretty good - gives a pretty detailed list (with explanations) of what is being used on the website/server.

    For Boards.ie:
    lighttpd, Varnish, Google Analytics, Full Circle Studies Beacon, ADTECH, Google JS Api, JQuery, Milonic, vBulletin, PHP, RSS, HTML 4.01 Transitional DTD, Canonical Content Tag, Javascript, Image Map, UTF-8.
