Unemployment in the South East has trebled in the last two years and is now the highest in the country.

New figures released by the CSO show unemployment rising from 6.1% in June 2008 to 18.1% in June of this year.

In the that time the South East gone from having the fifth highest unemployment rate to highest, with the Mid-West, at 16.3%, a considerable distance back in second place.

Doctor Edgar Morganroth says its now clear that the region has been particularly hard hit by the recession.

He says the region's difficulties are clearly linked to the structure of the economy.
