i'm about three quarters of the way through oliver rackham's woodlands - seems to be a minor update of a book published a few years back.
it's superb. it's written for the interested layman, and is very engaging; deals with the ecology and history of (mainly) the british woodlands, with a fair few references to ireland too. i picked it up for €25 - only available in hardback at the moment, from what i can see.

anyone else reading anything interesting or have any recommendations?
