    Hands off, the entire canal and towpath are needed for the imminent four tracking of the Dublin/Galway line - to cope with all the extra traffic coming off the WRC! :D

    That'd also require moving the services back via Mullingar not Athlone. More trains for me! :P

    Via Mullingar AND Athlone surely. And gives the double spectator bonus of a railway closing (Portarlington to Athlone) and re-opening (Mullingar to Athlone)

    They will never open Mullingar-Athlone. The best thing CIE could do is lift the tracks and sell the land.

    well I've cycled from North Strand road Bridge in D1 all the way to Leixlip a few times. It's one of the weirdest cycles in Dublin - over the M50 beside the canal and the train tracks, past broombridge urban wasteland
