A full week off any running in an effort to clear up injury once and for all.. :(

That sucks. By the way, are you following a training plan?

I was very loosely following Hal Higdon Intermediate 1 - but doing more miles than he asked quite often...

Cant help but think that Knee is not healing, done nothing this week, and after a 20 min swim this morning its sore [and I cant even swim, so its bursts of 10 meters and then stop] - asking myself if and not when now - bah

Joking aside I really do need a new hobby, as sitting on my arse with legs up every night forever may make it hard to keep the weight off :)

But looks like I need a job too, so its all coming at the same time, which is nice :)

    Update :

Have not run at all this week and its getting worse with the more rest I give it! I have Chondromalacia patellae [runners knee] in left knee.

I was ordered total rest with one or two low impact things allowed, so did gym on Tuesday before work [only 20 mins cardio between rower and cross trainer] rest of time upper body weights and very light swimming Thursday before work.

After very light swimming session knee was sore for ages.

Strolling around Stephens Green killing time on Friday morning it started killing me out of blue.

Walking up stairs to my seats in upper tier at [terrible] match yesterday it was agony. Where I walk up a couple of flights to stairs at work to get to my desk and use the stairs at work all the time, with zero problem. Had to get escalator down afterwards, with old folks and fat folks :(

Physio appointment at 8am tomorrow and its a cast of WTF?

Heck Vagga, thats sounds like a right mystery. Hope the physio gives you some good news in the morning.

That sucks Vagga, hope your physio solves it pronto!

Physio convinced I don't have structural problem. I have said here a few times that a good physio is worth solid gold. He went thru major parts of knee and what would be happening if there was a problem there, [ie: "..this is your cartlidge, if you had problem with it and i pressed here it would be sore, and if i bent knee this way that would happen"]. Utterly brilliant to be shown that, as an adult, and not for him to just fob me off as an idiot, with a "your grand, but no running"

So he was like, I will send you for a scan or to a specialist if you really want, but you will be totally wasting your money. They will telll you "do nothing for 6 weeks and come back and see me, that will be €300 please". So I trusted him and went with his advice without a second thought.

I have many trigger points in thigh, which rolling and stretching have not sorted out over last few weeks, but I have been working all over legs, and not focusing on that one area. So again we had a long session of dry needle work and targeted work on that thigh this morning, which was agony to be honest.

So another week off all running, strict orders on what rolling to do, and where to target it.

Also have orders on what cross training I can do, and what pain threshold is fine to work through. As I need to do some to maintain some basic level of fitness.

If things go my way this week, potential to get running to some level next week - fingers and toes crossed.

Much relieved knee has no major issue, but pissed off at same time at another week of no running

You were well ahead of where you needed to be for sub-4, so I reckon you're safe even with another week or two off. It's still a pain in the arse though.

    Midweek check-in?!

Hope you're feeling a bit better? Are you getting any cross training in? Don't let it get you down!

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,687 ✭✭✭tHE vAGGABOND

    Tuesday :
Went to gym after work, did 40 mins on cross trainer, with the instructions from my physio in my mind, while the knee was a small bit sore from quite early on, the pain did not get worse unless I went mental. The good thing was I was able to get a decent cardio workout done for first time in what seems like years.

Finished out with 25 mins of upper body weights.

Wednesday - knee a small bit stiff, but not too bad

    Tonight:
Busy at work [for wrong reasons!] so was it was almost home time before I realized my knee was just fine - with no issues at all. I was *very* tempted to go for a run, but thought better of it!

Did 40 mins on cross trainer again today and I have basically zero pain at all which is utterly brillaint - first sign of positive progress in ****ing ages  :cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool:

Cheers for all the support last week btw - you all rawk :D

If all is well I'm going to try a very slow 25 min / 30 min run Saturday morning [away for day, so will get it done very early, and wont be home until very late].

Fingers crossed I can come thru that in one piece. But I want to have tried to run before physio on Monday, as that was the plan for last week, but I abandoned after the bad few days.

    IM BACK!! YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Just under 3 miles at just over 30 mins..

Physio had said that as long as the pain did not go over 1/10 I was fine - so it hit that level after mile or so. So more of a dull "something" - but as long as it got no worse than that it was totally fine. Thats what happened.

He also said that I know Im basically all but better when even with that 1/10 pain, that the pain will be gone 10 mins after stopping when you stop. Which it did.

Im away tomorrow, but with a brainwave, Im going to do a longer run on a treadmill in the gym on Sunday, so its much lower impact.

Nice and easy now Vagga. Don't be going mad and we'll see you at a lsr soon.

Thanks again for the kind words everyone :)

Went out with the plan to do a longer run, but still keep it nice and slow. Went up to Eamon Ceanat Park, which is the closet park to me, so only a mile up there on back roads. Its just less than a mile around, so grand for a few laps.

Overall, I did around 5.5 Miles in 53 and a bit minutes.

As with Friday, after a couple of miles pain went to around 1/10 [very dull ache], and stayed there. Only moments after I stopped the pain was gone. Im back to physio in the morning, so interested in hearing what he says.

Brought the heart rate monitor for the first time in ages:

    Avg HR: 139 bpm
    Max HR: 153 bpm

Physio says Im good to get back into things , but was at pains to say that I needed to ease back in gently! But that's all good, Im well sold on taking it easy getting back into training, and not wanting to mess up leg again!

Lucky for me Im off to a wedding Thursday-Sunday in Scotland, so I can run for next 3 nights and maybe Sunday night when I get back into town, but while away I wont be running at all. That break of a few days is perfect [I was raging when I booked it, thinking I was missing a 20 miler!], as it means I cant over run at the weekend, which I would have been very high risk of doing otherwise:P.

This week goal/plan : 20 total Miles [over 3 or 4 runs] - taking it easy, maybe trying to do some of the mid-week run at 9 min mile pace.

Next week I would plan to have my "normal" planned week - which was a step back week / mini taper for the half anyway.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,551 ✭✭✭chinguetti

Vagga, are you a wedding planner on the side?:D

Bit by bit now. You've plenty miles in the legs from earlier in the year.

Might be better off taking them all easy, faster running puts more stress on your legs.

Ray et al - I know your totally correct, but I have been running at/just under 10 min miles since I came back, and will be doing the next couple of runs at that pace.

But was thinking *maybe* Wednesday night doing a slightly longer run [circa 7 miles - cleared with physio] just doing a mile or two in the middle a fraction quicker, at around 9 min mile pace that's all, not sprinting at all.

But I am all about being careful, as I dont want to mess it up again - so very much taking it easy!
