Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi all,

I'm planning on doing a bit of touring in Europe next spring. Nothing bananas but about 600/700km over 6/7 days. The big question is whether it would be practicle to use my current road bike (Specialized Allez Elite http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/bikes/road/product/allez-elite-09-33633) to tour with by putting on a tripple set, heavier tyres and fitting it with Panniers? (but not going mad on the weight i'd carry)

If I can, i'd like to avoid buying another bike as this recession thing is already a pain in the a55!:pac:

Any advice from those in the know would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks in advance,
    IE:pac:

I have toured the length and breadth of Ireland with my Spesh Allez Elite.
I used a rack which hooks on to the brake caliper and the rear wheel skewer.

I used my normal 23 tires.

If you can use two panniers, do. I was limited to one and it unbalanced the rear of the bike. You get used to it, but when I go again, I think I will balance my gear better.

Just be careful going over any potholes. The extra weight on the rear wheel makes it easier to puncture. Bigger tires may help you there, although I'm not sure how wide you could go with on the Allez. Maybe 25. I also had a race blade mudguard.

You can tour light with a road bike, yes. Another alternative for VERY light touring is a saddle and bar bag; I have done those sort of distances set up like that on both France (Raid Pyreneen) and Ireland.

I would certainly put on 25c tyres. I did it with 23c and looking back this was a mistake. As Raam says you risk punctures and also wheel buckles. Any road bike will take 25c tyres.

Thanks for that Blorg and Raam, much appreciated!

I'll stick with the Specialized so, using 25c tyres and double panniers (but lightly loaded.) and I'll let ye know how I get on!

    thanks again:pac:
