Great use of musical samples?

There are songs/pieces of music that, in my opinion, are better than what the sample is taken from originally, e.g:

Orbital - Halcyon (sample: Opus III, It's a Fine Day)
Notorious B.I.G. - Mo' Money Mo' Problems (sample: Diana Ross, I'm Coming Out)
De La Soul (masters of sampling) - Say No Go (sample: Hall & Oates, I Can't Go For That)

I'm sure more will come to me. Personally, I think sampling, when done well, is a brilliant technique.

I'm really digging Panda Bear's album "Person Pitch" which features a lot of sampling.
"Bros" features samples from Cat Stevens, the Tornados and Rub a Dub Dub and it all meshes surprisingly well.

"What Would I Want Sky" by Animal Collective contains a sweet sample from "Unbroken Chain" by the Grateful Dead.
This song is so chilled out and dreamy. The sample doesn't drop till 3:11

A sampler is essentially an instrument when used by someone who actually knows what they're doing - there's a great skill in constructing a new track out of samples while making it sound completely seamless. I always find Amon Tobin's records to be fascinating, as it is almost entirely constructed out of samples of old vinyl. Check out Stoney Street on youtube for an interesting set of samples from a diverse range of sources

Also Mr Scruff's most well known tune Get a Move On is actually largely sampled from an old Moondog piece called Bird's Lament. Great sample though.

great video, hadn't seen it before. Their entire album is a work of sampling genius (also worth checking out their "Gimix" version which features a whole bunch of samples they weren't able to clear from the likes of Madonna, Bob Dylan etc). Really hope they do get another record out, but losing faith slightly after 10 years of silence.

That avalanches samples video is excellent.

Saint Etienne's Nothing Can Stop Us Now is a based on a sample from Dusty Springfield's version of I Can' Wait To See My Baby's Face. I can't find Dusty's version on youtube, but Aretha Franlin's is pretty close. I prefer Nothing Can Stop Us Now - slightly naff video and all.

There IS talks of it, but really I doubt it. I'm 99% sure the record is finished, Ariel Pink's recording session was a while back now...

That is entirely based on this post on the Avalanches forum back in 2010.
"i hear ariel pink is recording some guest vocals for it and once those are done, the album will be finished"
