Occupational Therapy

I'm a Leaving Cert student who, after deciding that Medicine wouldn't be the right fit, has looked into Occupational Therapy. This really feels like a career I could see myself in, and I was just wondering is anyone studying or working as an Occupational Therapist, and could they give me any pointers on what it's like day to day? Is the course stressful? What's involved? Thanks.

    hi there
i am applying for OT in the Uni of Ulster as a mature student.
i am doing a placement in my local hospital for two weeks ( around work) and planning on doing a second one afterwards. you would get a good idea of what it involves. remember you may have to do the HPAT for the university of your choice.

What is the male/female ratio like for the classes? Is it female dominated like nursing?

Also a first year OT in Trinity, would be delighted to answer any questions!! Also, yes, our year is hugely female dominated...out of a class of 43 approx there is one boy...

Oh, really? I'm kind of worried about that. I wouldn't mind if it was slightly more females than males but I don't think I'd feel comfortable being the only lad in a class like that. I thought OT was separate from Nursing as far as that whole gender-domination thing went?

Yeah some of the other years have a few more lads but really not too many, I think like 3 or 4? Honestly though don't let that put you off!

I have just done my first interview for a MSc in OT in the UK. Not crazy about the city itself but the Uni seems good.

Is OT a great career? A few people have said to me that they don't have any respect in the hospitals and that its a non job. I was baffled.
Is this true? I am very happy with my choice however I would be open to any reactions to this.

I think OT is a good career due to the number of practice areas - acute hospitals, paediatrics, mental health, community and that you can specialise within these areas yet again i.e. neurology, autism, hands etc. The respect issue probably depends on the setting and the team you're working on. On placement last year (I'm third tear in Trinity) the doctors knew exactly what the OT did and saw how necessary input from an OT was but this may not be the case in all areas.
Also we probably need a bigger evidence base to prove what we do works but that's my own personal nit picking!!!
