Aurora Telecom, a division of Bord Gáis Networks, is planning to install what it calls an 'ultra high speed' fibre optic network between Dublin and the west of Ireland.

The company says the network will be available to other telecommunications companies and corporate organisations. The project will also allow companies to 'own' a fibre optic network by providing dedicated fibre for individual companies. This is known as 'dark fibre'.

Aurora says 'dark fibre' is important for multi-national companies as it allows them to effectively control their telecoms networks, enabling them to reduce costs.

Aurora is installing more than 330km of fibre-optic cable in ducting laid along the route of Bord Gáis's gas pipeline to the West. The route will include Galway, Athlone, Mullingar and Ennis, and other towns along the route will be connected as demand requires.

'This development is of critical importance to the upgrading of digital based services in the country and supports the Government's vision of a Smart Economy,' commented Bord Gáis CEO John Mullins.

'High speed bandwidth services are essential in order to encourage foreign direct investment and Bord Gáis is delighted to be in a position to offer this to large corporate entities and telecommunications carriers from Dublin right across to the West of Ireland,' he added.
