Tyre Problem

Hey all,

I've recently gotten a bike, and it was in need of repair, but I've encountered one problem, I've put new tyres and tubes on it, but the the back tyre doesn't seem to be inflating fully. and when i'm cycling the bike the back tyre seems very very flat and i can fell the the ground under me.

I've had the same issue in the past with a mountain bike I once owned.

Can anyone think of what may be wrong with it??

If you've inflated it fully, but then it later goes soft, you have a puncture

If it's always been that soft, then you haven't inflated it fully. Mountain bike tyres are typically pumped to 40psi+
Road bike tyres are typically pumped to around 110psi.

It only feels soft when i'm cycling, i can press down down on it with my own force and it feels strong before and after cycling but its during cycling that it feels soft and flat.

Do i need a specific pump for a racer?

If it's a road bike, it should be very close to rock solid (100-120psi), there should be very little "give" when you squeeze the tyre. If you're using a bog standard hand pump, you haven't a hope of pumping it up enough. What you need is a track pump. Helpfully track pumps also have pressure gauges on them.

You can pick up any half-decent one for €20.

Don't get a half decent plastic one one. Buy once and get one with a metal casing. Like the Joe Blow max in halfords.

We had two half decent ones give up in our house this year.

I have a Joe Blow one and its great. Its just so easy to pump the tyres to the correct pressure now. I got this one,
