    Essentially he is saying the medicine will be particularly bitter in this round due to already low interest rates and the number of countries that are trying (being forced) to consolidate simultaneously. The pain will be short term (1 Year? 2 years?) and will lead to gains.

    The Alesina and Ardagna paper cited by the IMF piece is here (regressions relating to fiscal adjustment are in tables 9 & 10 at the end). The Economist carried an article on the methodological differences in each paper. Alesina responds here.
