Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I love Del Piero but I'd be biased.

    No poll?
    Raúl by a mile.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,909 ✭✭✭✭Xavi6

    Del Boy easily imo

Del Piero all day every day.

Raul's a good player, but nowhere near as good as Il Pinturicchio.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 692 ✭✭✭gleep

    Del Piero, more craft.

What a pairing that would have been.............

    Del Piero.

    poll added.

it's Del Piero for me; and it's not even that close.

it's more of a reflection of my admiration for Alessandro than any detriment towards Raúl.

Del Piero has scored against Rovers. Raul did not..Raul was kept quiet by Pat Flynn..

So Del Piero along with being a better player too....

Del Piero is still the best free kick taker in the world btw

Conclusie proof that 16 people happened to agree. I however don't. Raul was better in my view.

Technically both are quite different players but for me Del Piero was by far the most skillful.Raul has probably out scored him by quite some way but there's more to it than goals alone.

Del Piero actually has a better goals per game ratio at club level.

    Career totals,

Del Piero Apps 650 Goals 277
    Raul Apps 730 Goals 283

Del Piero by far for me.

Del Piero for me. Was some player to watch in the late 90's and he was only a pup then!

Used to love this advert with him as a young'un.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,021 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Raul was more consistent but I'd say Del Piero at his peak was better. Still over their whole careers to date its very hard to separate them and I won't vote on it.

I have been watching Del Piero since he made his debut in 1993. He is a legend. I had the pleasure of seeing him train at the Comunale many times in Turin. He is also an absolute gentleman.

I used to love his goals in which in would cut in from the left and curl it in to the top right corner.

After he scored 2 goals against Madrid in the CL in 2009, Maradona said, "I am certain Del Piero really never grows old." He also received a standing ovation from the Bernabeu crowd.

He has 277 goals in 650 games and was out for at least 18 months in his prime!!!

Raul is/was a super player but I think Del Piero edges this contest.

Del Piero by a good bit. The man was class. Raul was good, but he wasn't of Del Piero's ilk.

    Del Piero.

Whoever voted Raul is wrong, which is a shame, because now we can all see their names and how wrong they are.

Voting Del Boy but surprised its as clear cut as everyone is making out, I had to mull it over for quite some time. Very little in it, two of the very best of the previous decade.

    What's your point?

Similar goals per games ratios in the Champions League actually,

Del Piero 44 in 93 games

    Raul 66 in 132 games

I prefer Del Piero, but I voted Raul based on success. He was the lynchpin in a team that won a lot more on an international level than Juve. I know Del Piero won a world cup, but he wasn't one of the key elements in that team.

    Raul for me.

Guess who I voted for. :p

Del Piero is/was definitely the more talented, skillful player IMO.

I wish that free kick that hit the crossbar tonight went in.

Gary Neville on Del Piero: "He is the greatest player I have ever played against."

If Gary Neville says it, it must be true. :P

Can anyone make a proper judgement, though? Never saw either of them play on a regular basis, ie week in, week out. Only the odd CL game or World Cup / Euros.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,950 ✭✭✭Pinturicchio

I've probably seen most the games Del Piero has played in his career.

    Alessandro Del Piero
Both excellent players, loved watching both play, both were better in their prime then most around them.

I picked Raul simply through personal choice, Raul was more of goal scoring threat while Del Piero was a brillant link man who also bagged goals.

    Top quality players.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,862 ✭✭✭✭inforfun

Too different to compare i say.
Where Del Piero is/was more a playmaker/no 10, Raul is more an out and out forward.

Both great players but if had to pick 1 to add to my team it would always be Del Piero.

Goal in the semi-final against Germany in 2006.

Sublime penalty in the Final. Hardly a fringe element in the squad.

Also, in head to heads in recent years Del Piero outshone Raul.

    Del Piero everytime.
    A much more creative player.
Raul isn't bad himself, but there's just more to Del Piero's game.

    Glazers Out!

Alex Ferguson was talking about a particular moment in time, the question I asked encompasses both players over their whole careers, so Alex Fergusons quote doesn't really count in this context

Yup, I can. Like you, Sir Alex Ferguson was wrong. Dont worry, happens the best of us. Although like timetogetfit says, you're taking it out of context, so you're probably wrong again.

Watching that video of Del Piero reminds me of the seria a highlights that used to be on network 2.

What was that show called again?

This is probably the best freekick I have ever seen in real time (as in, I was watching the match).

How can I make it simplier for you, what Alex Ferguson said about Raul being the best player in the world in 2003 may be true, yes he may have been better than Del Piero in 2003, im not disputing that, but both players have had long careers and even if Raul was better than Del Piero in 2003 it doesnt mean he was better over his whole career, there where plenty of years that del piero was a better player than Raul

I think Raul was one of the best strikers I've ever seen play at his peak. Really fantastic player. I'd pick him over Del Piero, but then again, I never really watched that much of Del Piero in Serie A so it's tough to say.

Probably Del Piero. I took a long time to warm to him after Baggio got the elbow to make way for him, and I still don't rate him as highly, but I could never stand Raul.

Del Pierro has played in Tallaght. This automatically makes him better.

Hang on, this is Del Piero vs Raul, not Del Piero vs Andy Cole. I voted Del Piero, but I don't see any "shame" in voting Raul. Two of the best forward players of the last 20 years, 2nd and 3rd behind Ronaldo imo.

I hate this s**t of 'my cock is bigger than yours' when it comes to football opinions.

Del Piero rocked the long hair, Raul not so much!
