Has anyone on here ever exported a car to Australia before?

The car im thinking of sending is a classic 85 Mercedes.

Does anyone have any advice on what they did, what taxes/fees etc are associated with it? What shipping company did you use?

    Cheers :)

Hi, I haven't done it but I've looked into it. You might need to pay GST (like VAT) about 10% ( I don't know what they value the percentage on), import duty, might have to be steam cleaned here at the docks. The car will have to be complianced for Australia, but if the car is 1989 or older it's not as complicated as a newer car, should be around 500 AUD. It's about 2200 AUD for newer cars. There's loads of good info on the brits in oz sites. Let us know how you get on!

Thanks for your imput mate. Ive also heard this that pre 89/90 cars pay a lesser tax somewhere along the line.

    What other charges are there?

Here's some good info if you haven't already found this.

Also you need to be a resident or on the road to residency to bring your vehicle in.
Australia has also recently put 'anti hooning' legislation into effect to try to cut down on road hooligans, part of this deals with modifying cars so say for example your pre 89 merc was restored in 1998, then you would no longer qualify for the pre 89 charges. You would have to pay full whack

Surely this would depend on the type of resto - cutting the cancer out, respraying it and putting new springs and shocks under the old girl surely wouldn't affect things. Surely it'd only be if you had one of those cars from say the UK, that have been fully made over, and had the odo set back to 0.00.

There is loads of info on importing cars, on pomsinoz.com, in the Transport and Shipping section...
