Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Just thinking, alot of stations have these. You can listen to an entire radio show from any day of the week, on any day of the week. For instance, missed Morning Ireland? Ah sure I'll catch it on listen again.

But would this not make listener figures go down for Morning Ireland or any radio show with a listen again?

Surely it would make them go up if anything.

Their *live* figures may drop, sure... but give the listeners more ways to listen and their overall listenership should improve.

plus, they can calculate definite listening figures for the player as opposed to estimating them for the broadcast.

Ah right, see I thought that only people that actually listened on the radio were counted in the survey. Cheers lads.

The home page of Newstalk's new website is almost entirely dedicated to playback. http://www.newstalk.ie/

Well no... if someone says they "listened yesterday" (one of the ratings in the JNLRs), that doesn't necessarily mean on FM... especially these days!

So yeah - the more ways to listen, the better :)

    Ah right, do podcasts count?

Well it depends. There's no specific figures for podcasts included in the ratings, but if a surveyed listener, when asked what they listened to yesterday, says they listened to - say, FM104 - that certanly counts, even if it was an FM104 podcast they actually listened to.

I'm told 96FM in Cork deliberately dont carry podcasts or "listen again" for the high rated Opinion Line show due to fear of litigation on topics discussed...a ridiculous excuse!

They have a rubbish token podcast sub-site here

    http://www.96fm.ie/music/podcasts.aspx

They're also one of the very few stations in Ireland that have not yet developed a smartphone app for the station. The whole thing beggars belief in this day and age! Its not like UTV dont have the readies to make this happen!

In fairness, UTV should save a few quid and make ONE GOOD app that gives you a choice of listening to any of their Irish radio stations and has extra features a-lá the RTÉ Pocket app instead of having their individual stations making fairly featureless efforts through which you can just tune in live and little or nothing else...

i dont really understand why the playback/podcasts would be counted for listenership figures as arent they pretty much used to show how popular a show is and how then they are good for advertisers?
and since adverts arent on the podcasts they shouldnt be counted

also for the same reason why do radio stations put up their shows with no ads?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,309 ✭✭✭✭Bard

adamski8 - Whether adverts are included doesn't come into it. The listenership figures are based on a survey. Podcasts aren't specifically used to make up the figures but, as I already explained, if someone who is being surveyed said they listened to Station X, then that's all that matters. It may in-fact be the case that what they listened to was a podcast by Station X and not the live station itself. Doesn't matter... they said they listened to Station X and that counts as one listener for them.

You ask why do stations put up their shows with no ads... well that's what podcasts usually are - the "best bits" of shows. If you want to hear full shows back, ads and all, then you want a "playback" or "listen again" service, not a podcast. Examples of these include:

    2fm: http://2fm.rte.ie/previously_played/
    Today FM: http://www.todayfm.com/Music/ListenBack.aspx
    Newstalk: http://media.newstalk.ie/listenback/
    Phantom 105.2: http://www.phantom.ie/on-demand/listen-back.html

These are just a few of the "listen back" services available. There are more...

Well in fairness when you have Neil in your company I can see their point. And the no app baffles me.

And speaking of the Rte pocket player it's good but the the seperate radio one and 2fm had some form of listen back option which is missing in the new pocket player. And the documentary on one app(brilliant content), wont continue when your phone locks.
