    Hello all!

Am newish to Dublin (and Ireland) and wondering if anyone could recommend a good butcher which stocks a wide range of meats and cuts in Dublin?? (North side preferably, as I live in Dublin 15, but I don't mind driving anywhere in Dublin!) Specifically, one that a very wide range of quality meats (various types of cuts per animal), and a range of different types (ie lamb, veal, rabbit... could source pigeon or pheasant if necessary!). Don't have to be a fancy high-end butcher, just one that's not focused on the pre-prepared convenience meat items.

Near to me, people have recommended McArdle Meats to me in Charlestown shopping centre as a good one - but that butcher's focus seems to be on pre-prepared meat items (ie pre-cut chicken fillets, meatballs, stuffed chickens, kebabs etc etc). There is not a wide range of straight-up cuts and meats from what I can tell from their website.

I like having the basic cuts because they often work out as better value (cheap tough cuts in a slow cooker, yum yum yum!) and if they have bones I can make lovely stocks and soups :) Also I like cooking game occasionally and I haven't spotted anywhere that seems to have a good (or any) range.

Would really appreciate any advice anyone could give :)

    Thanks!

If you can get into the city centre Fallon & Byrne off George's Street is good for things like rabbit. There's also a farmer's market in Meeting House Square in Temple Bar on Saturdays and a few of the butchers there often have game; pheasent, mallard etc.

I go to McArdles all the time - they'll have anything you want, preprepared or not. I find them absolutely excellent, the quality is second-to-none and they're very approachable, I regularly ask for advice and get a lot of help from them.

Just on the southside of the Liffey is Clyne's butchers, Fitzwilliam Street, Ringsend, Dublin 4. Dial 6680456. Great butchers and recommended by Bord Bia. They supply a very wide and traditional range of meats, and are also organic meat specialists. They sell to both well known restaurants and over the counter to the public. If you are looking for something specific call in advance and let them advise you. Ask for Peter.

Try FX buclkeys on moore st, wide range off stuff in there

Have you asked your local butcher, they can probably provide what you want it just might not be on show

+1 on both counts - used to help my da when he was delivering to Moore St and they usually can get you anything you need - meat wise before I cause some offence:o

For a good range of game and more unusual meat, try Downeys in Terenure.

Brilliant - thank you all very much, your suggestions are appreciated!! I am going to check them all out, especially FX Buckley. :)

:) Looking forward to cooking tasty meaty meals in the near future!!! Just what's needed as the weather gets cooler. :D

Gotta say - I love the fact that the best meat does actually come from butchers here in Ireland. Recently moved here from New Zealand and the supermarkets and very cheap and nasty mass-fatty-meat-warehouse butchers have the market all tied up there (water and colouring agents injected into meat etc etc). Seems like the usual thing to know your butcher here, rather than something for the very well off in fancy areas! :P

Yes, this is true. And it is up to all of us to support local butchers to ensure that they continue to thrive.

Buckleys on Moore St does all those meats you mention (fan of game meat myself). Also, they will order in meats for you if you ask them.

I found a great butcher last weekend when I was taking my kids on the Dublin Wheel in the point village. Its just round the corner from there, Egan's I think it was called. It's just off Upper Sheriff St. I got a shoulder of Irish lamb with the bone in for €8.00 and it was lovely.

You don't usually see shoulder of lamb sold like that in Ireland, it's usually boned and rolled. I find you get a bit more tenderness and flavour when cooking joints that haven't been boned (oo-er).

Great value on other stuff in there as well.

I know its way out of your way, but theres an excellent butcher in Bray. Hes in the Superquinn shopping centre. Now he does focus on pre-prepared stuff but I was chatting to him one day and he can easily get game and other meats and pretty much prepare whatever you want. He also makes his own sausages which I have to say are delicious!

You can get rabbit in the Russian shop in the coolmine industrial estate. They have a range or more unusual things that you dont find in usual butchers. I would agree with FX buckly in town being very good.
