Checking oil temperature

    I'm going to be cooking tempura for dinner tonight. Can anyone recommend a good way to know when the oil is hot enough to cook in, bearing in mind that I don't have a deep fat fryer or an oil thermometer.

    I think you throw in a cube of bread and when it goes brown in about 60 seconds its ready.

    Saw Luke Nguyen on Masterchef Australia recently demonstrate hot oil by dipping a wooden skewer in the oil. When the wood looks like its frying, the oil is ready. Just a few bubbles appearing around the wood just under the surface of the oil.
