dropped the ball last night.. dam you brodeur...

He's really got an edge over his hometown team, always seems to do it.

Penguins got a hard-fought 4-3 OT win last night thanks to Sid, Geno and Letang. Sid has exploded into life with 8 points in the last 3 games, going to the top of the points chart in the process and Malkin is on a five-game point streak too.

Brooks Orpik is back tomorrow night, so things are looking up for the Pens after a sluggish start.

have to say that Halak was briliant in goal for the blues...

should be good... aaron asham gets his first start, eric tangradi is back in minors and michalek and staal are making steady progress

Hey, I am fairly new to this forum (think I may have posted something here last season) - didn't realise there was much activity in the way of US sports on boards.ie. Delighted that there is though.

NHL and MLB are my passions in terms of US sports (to a lesser extent NFL) and don't really watch a whole lot of NBA.

Just wondering, as a sort of introduction here - who do you support (NHL) and why?

I have been a Sharks fan ever since I got into to Hocky about 5 years ago, still waiting for their first Stanley Cup triumph, they always look so strong during Regular season and just don't seem to have the "oomph" for post season.

TBH, I can't really remember how I became so passionate about the Sharks - probably down to one of the first teams I seen (on a regular basis), the franchise's relative newness to the League and their general underdog status at the time.

Nothing I love more than sitting down to watch the Sharks (Jersey on, beer in hand). That and watching the Texas Rangers in the MLB.

I guess it's fairly obvious from my posts that I support the penguins:D
Ever since as a kid I seen Mario Lemieux to lift the Stanley cup in 1991 & 1992, when he retired the first time I was supporting tha Colorado avalanche for 3or 4  years but eventually got back to the penguins.

As for MLB, well I hate it ;) there isn't a more boring thing on Telly to watch ( I mean sport ) can't wait for the season to finish and then it's all hockey on espn America!!! Said that I think that baseball players are some athletes!!!

Watched only the first period of this one, and what a crazy period it was. Two shorthanded goals on the one powerplay, almost unheard of with the Pens. Overall though the lead after the first was undeserved and I've no doubt the result was fair. Pens were really weak.

Welcome! Have to agree with Izy on this and say that the MLB is the most zzzz.... sport in the world! Each to their own though! Do you get to watch the Sharks much given the time difference, or are you in the states?

Have you seen the video of Mario called "fearless"? Its available online, watched it a few nights back and was very impressed. The guy is the ultimate sportsman, so unlucky with injuries.

    go Bruins.
I want the cup this year. I wanna see it in person.
Went to the pre-season opener. 4 seats from the glass. It was lovely.

Trying to get the same tickets for next month to bring a bachelor party to

I'm kinda surprised to see a Hockey forum over here... I didn't expect many fans of it in Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 407 ✭✭Izy

I think there is only 4-5 regular posters here :D

Nice to see a new face...

Good start to the season for the bruins... Got a great addition in Nathan Horton

I work in Boston, so I'm in the Garden every morning.

We're behind the stupid Habs right now, but only because our season roll out is SO SLOW!
Every other team has played 12-14 games and the Bruins have played a whopping 9! Only St Louis has played 9 games.

It's weird... I feel like every time I turn on the TV, there's never any Bruins games to watch.

Go Rangers! Callahan is my boy, he's the bomb. Capitals game is on right now, 3-2 to Rangers in the 2nd. We're making it happen.

carey price pulled an awesome save on Canes the other night, halfway through the third, he was instrumental in their steamrolling of them.

habs on a roll, price shut out the flyers by stopping 41 shots

5-4 Win for the Leafs over the Predators last night...Great game! :)

Anyone watching the 7-7 game between Tampa and the Flyers? Third period is underway, Flyers on the powerplay at the moment.

Edit: Lightning lead 8-7 with 13 to go.

I watched the re-run of that today, incredible game. Stamkos really is some talent.

Pens-Canes is going to overtime tonight, very very controversial call for the Pens tonight to allow their 4th goal. Hopefully the good OT record continues in the next five minutes...

Hey all, haven't been around for a while and what a time was that for my penguins :D
Watched a few of their winning games too so the curse was broken

    Trashers tonite!!!

Both teams are red hot but I hope for a 10th W in a row and Sid break in Wayne Gretzky's 51 game point streak :D

How awesome would that be!!!!! go PENS

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,227 ✭✭✭Shanannigan

anyone see caps getting demolished by rangers last night? why was Varlamov not pulled?

  • Registered Users Posts: 137 ✭✭StevoTG

I've seen two of their last three games, including the Rangers game. I had money on them against the Panthers and they started well. After they failed to score on their first couple of powerplays, particularly the 5 on 3, the self belief seemed to go out the window and it hasn't come back. 6 defeats on the bounce and the 7-0 loss was humiliating. Considering that it's only December I wouldn't be making any huge statements over their silverware chances though.

Did anyone see the Canucks against Tampa Bay on Markus Naslund day? A 5-4 OT loss for the Canucks.

Any Bruins fans knocking around? Decent season so far. Tim Thomas is amazing. Everyone chipping in doing their bit and guys like Horton stepping up their game. Think Seguin is looking decent. Beat the Ducks tomorrow night and they're top of the division. Really between the Bruins and the Habs for the division.

I think you really jinxed Horton. He hasn't scored a point in six games.

Never realised there was a NHL thread here. Good stuff. Lived in NYC for a while last year and went down to watch the rangers in MSG religiously. Used to sit in 120, great seats. Got to see Crosby and Ovechkin play in the flesh. Was at the game last Feb when the Caps beat the Rangers 6-5 and Ovechkin was awesome that night, to be fair. Rangers were very inconsistent last season but better offensively due to Garborik. Happy enough with how this season is going. Following it on ESPN from here.

Canadiens V Bruins game was very entertaining over the weekend! Montreal were 2-0 down with 4 minute sto go and won it in overtime! Great stuff! 25/1 longshot this season!

Hahaha...think I'll keep my mouth shut from now on!! Great win last night against the Flyers. Mental game, back and forth. Penguins again on Saturday at the early time of 6pm!! Hooray, I don't have to miss out on sleep!!

and as a Bruins fan, the less said about that Canadiens game the better!! Talk about throwing it away (ah in fairness Habs were all over them in that 3rd period, still annoyed though)

Agreed, i was so frustrated watching that game, you could see it coming but they seemed not to be able to do anything to stop it. Anyway, we're still looking good. Buffalo tonight and Ference back in the starting line up, looking for another good show, predicting a 4-0 for the killer B's.

Great to go into the ASG break with a win, took a bit more than i thought but still a win is a win. Been a good season so far, Thomas and Lucic been stand out for me, Sequin coming along nicely, very fast and good on the puck, and Steven Kampfer has been brilliant since brought in, great to see him getting his chance.

Second part of the season is gonna be very interesting, Bruins gotta keep up the intensity, keep putting the puck on net and if Thomas and Rask keep being a wall, no reason we should get to play-off's feeling very confident.

    Bring it on!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 110 ✭✭Doctor Zaius

This is the craziest start to a Bruins hockey game I've ever seen. 3 fights in the first 4 seconds and Lucic scores after 35 seconds!!! crazy stuff!!

Make that 2-0. 2 goals inside the first 2 minutes!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 137 ✭✭StevoTG

Just saw some highlight of this tonight.

That had to be the most ridiculous start to a hockey game ever. I think I remember a Bruins game a few years back where the last minute and a half took an age because fights kept breaking out but for a game to start like that is unreal. Clearly, the fighting start got the Bruins firing on all cylinders.

I know we lost, but it was one hell of a game. those 2 1st period markers proved to be the difference in the end. God only know's what may have happened had they gone to overtime.

I fell asleep in the 1st period interval!! Probably shouldn't watch games when lying in bed. Great to have good news first thing in the morning though :P Glad the Bruins finally got one over the Habs this season.
Looks like the Big Bad Bruins are back!! Really getting stuck into opponents this year!! seems the Thomas - Price fight wasn't up too much though.

Well after the epic game against the Canadiens, we came crashing back to earth last night versus the Red Wings. I think emotion of the last few days got to them, and they looked very flat and stale, but gotta get over that and hopefully we can get the two points in the return game tomorrow.

I felt sorry for Rask last night though, everything seemed to fall against him and he looked very disconsulate after being pulled. On the other hand, i wonder whats going through Sequin's mind, hasn't been with it the last while, here's hoping the short break will wake him up and he can start to show the energy and talent he staerted off the season with.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 110 ✭✭Doctor Zaius

Disappointing weekend for the Bruins. Had a look at some stats there, think that's the first time they've lost 2 in a row since last game of 2010/first game of 2011 which is good going. Still in the divisional spot for the playoffs, Habs are right behind now. That's going to get very interesting. I expect them to bounce back against the Leafs tomorrow night. Next three games are Leafs, Islanders and Senators. All 3 are having pretty poor seasons, even though Islanders seem to have hit some form, I'd be hoping for full points. Go Bruins!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 110 ✭✭Doctor Zaius

I'm gonna keep my mouth shut from now on. No more predictions!! Hope they can snap out of this cold streak soon. Just lucky the Habs lost last night as well.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 344 ✭✭FunnyStuff

What a load of **** that was last night. 2 points thrown away for third loss in a row. Very difficult loss to take it was, we weren't playing particularly well but still managed to come back from 2-1 down and then managed to throw it away. GOD DAMN!!!

Not a good way to be heading into a six game road trip with a tricky start away to the islanders. One thing i do like is the acquisition of Chris Kelly, a tough nut who should add some steel in front of the net and do some real dog's work. We need someone in there to bully d-men and make a nuisance in front of the goalie. I though Sequin done ok last night, put himself about alot and threw in body on the line to get at pucks at times, hopefully he can keep it up. Still work to do for him, he's still young. Needs to stop giving the puck away to easy at times, but then again i think at times he aint getting alot of help from those around him.

any early predictions for the playoff race? who do you see making the cut? can Devils pull off a sensational 2nd half by nicking 8th in the east?
who will be at the right end of the concertina bunched around the mid table in the west?

Good to see the Bruins have recovered a bit.

FunnyStuff - What do you make of the trades on Friday. Kaberle, Peverley and Valabik in, Wheeler and Stuart out?

Yeah was a good road trip for us, trying not to think of the omens from the last time we had a 6-0 road trip. Good time of the year to be getting into the flow and finding some solid consistency. Also nice to see Rask getting some good ice time and confidence into him. Be great to reach playoffs and have the two goalies brimming to get out there and keep the net safe.

As for the trades, absolutely delighted with Kaberle. I think he's gonna be great for us, will take a little bit of time to gel but i think we're already starting to see the benefits he brings to the game. Very good with the puck and got great vision, can hold it up well when he needs to. Peverly i like, think he will grow into it more and more and brings alot of depth to the team. Valabik i'm not sure of, i know he's gonna spend most of his time at the minute with Providence, but i just dunno if he's gonna be much good to us. I know he's big and strong, but thats not always what we need.

To be honest i'd have liked to have kept Stuart, i know he had issues with injuries, but i liked him, good and aggresive, never shied away from his duties and always put in 110%. So not sure about that. As for Wheeler, he blew hot and cold, so hard to tell at times where he was at.

But all in all, happy where we are at this stage of the season, hopefully we can steer clear of any injuries and enter the play-offs at full steam.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 110 ✭✭Doctor Zaius

Hahaha... those omens are pretty daunting alright, could this be the year :P 7 wins on the trot now. Happy days :D Looking good at the moment. Yeah having 2 solid goalies is great. Having Rask there is keeping Thomas on his toes.

Saying that, I can definitely see the Bruins getting the Habs first off in the playoffs and I can see the Habs probably beating them and whats been an excellent season for the B's will be wasted

Western Conference is incredibly tight. only 3 points separating 4th and 11th. very exciting, Columbus in 12th have a bit of a chance as well. That will be great to watch.

Eastern Conference - things are a bit clearer. You would think the top 5 there are pretty safe. Montreal on 77points should be safe as well. It would take a miracle for the Devils to get 8th but sure you just never know. Leafs could sneak in there.
