i was told victoria lodge and ucc halls get their internet service from the university so i thought i would post a question i have here.

i play FPS games such as cs online but with the internet in Vic lodge it seems to be blocking the program i use ( steam ) from accessing the internet. the same is for playing WoW ( i know i'm a nerd!)

is there anything i can do to fix this or are these programs going to remain blocked for the year??

funny thing is i can go onto thepiratebay.com and eircom has the site blocked yet the ucc internet doesnt? >.>

With the UCC internet, you can download the torrent file from sites like the piratebay, but can't actually torrent.

don't want to derail your thread or anything, but this is a slightly similar topic.

What is the official status on using sites like rapidshare. Im sure i heard somewhere baout some guy getting a cease and desist letter, or whatever you want to call it from the university for downloading illegal files.

Im just wondering though, because i was gonna download a couple fo user compiled albums from another forum i use today, but its been uploaded to rapidshare, and i dont want to be caught for illegal activity, on the basis that it simply came from rapidshare?

    Anyone help?

Steam will not work on UCC internet. Period. Sorry.

As for rapidshare and the like, it works using http protocol which is the same protocol browsers use to surf the web (how 90's of me) so rapidshare is fine to use. I can't see why the college would crack onto someone for using rapidshare, its a perfectly legal site. They'd have to break the law to find out the content of what you're downloading from it so if by some miracle someone gives out for you for using rapidshare just throw that in their face

It's not that they block specific things. It's just that the only ports available to use on UCC's network are 80 and 443. (http and https). It says this somewhere on the sit site I just can't find it atm. Some applications like pidgin can work by using system proxy settings but I doubt any games can work.

How do you expect WoW to work? You're going to install the 20 terrabytes of game data and all the updates on the UCC computers?

The only thing you can do is try to route your traffic. You can get many games to work by using http-tunnel. You can try the "slow" service for free before you upgrade to the faster one if you choose to.

    http://www.http-tunnel.com/html/solutions/http_tunnel/client.asp

Just put the proxy server as "localhost" and the port as 1080 in the program you're using and everything else will work if you can get it installed and working itself. You can also change ALL port to run through localhost and 1080 if you click the "use this host and port for all protocols" in advanced/network/settings of Firefox. It worked in the eleceng building anyway when I was there, while Hopster worked only sometimes and was a bit more problematic.

It won't work very well even on high-speed for speed intensive games that rely heavily on ping like first person shooters, because it has to go to a server that's god knows where that has to act as the middle-man.

The low-speed version is like 56k, so it's mainly only suitable for things like IRC and games where a very low speed is fine, like chess. The high-speed version is good, but it costs a few euro per month. You have to pay because you're using someone else's server to route your traffic. There's no way around this unfortunately.

However what you could try, and what I would try to do if I were in your position, is to route it through your own computer at home and have your own computer at home working as a server. There could be lots of benefits for this.... first you would be really close to it so the ping times should be very fast, second you might even be able to use "Remote Desktop" or something so you could play anything you wanted without even installing it on the college computers. You could also allow your friends to use it and be the coolest guy around, for a while anyway.

WoW is a p2p application and that`s why its banned, just like online poker etc. Only way around is a remote connection to external internet connection I believe, which is pointless unless u can afford that (extra PC at home or sumthin might work).

oops didn`t read superinfinitys post much first time- yeah he covered it basically. However I know for a fact using such a server is a breach of the UCC terms and conditions especially if you`re using it to play games etc. (im talking about internet while on campus). Not sure what the penalties are tho

wow uses p2p when downloading new patches, you can tick whether to do this or not though in a section of the blizzard downloader.

i would understand ucc blocking all this on the actuall campus but im sitting back in my appartment and cant go online with games. why bother supplying internet to accomadation when we cant even use it the way we want to.

If you're that stuck go into 02 and get a dongle for €20 a month.

WOW works quite well on it(there will be lag around 7-10pm), as does steam.

An easy solution for €5 a week. (price of a pint)

And yeah, Rapidshare works well on UCC's connection.

When I studied there I had a rapidshare premium account.
I could download 7 100mb files in like 2 mins having them all going together.
I put them all onto my 4gb pen drive (massive for the time) and brought them home.

UCC's connection is awesome, especially back then when 3MB residential lines were the most you'd get in Cork.

was thinking of doing that but im not sure how suitable they would be for gaming.

    They're grand, trust me.

I've played WOW and Starcraft 2 online with it. Never played FPS games as they're not my thing but I have used the 02 dongle on my Ps3 via internet connection sharing and played Super Street Fighter IV with it and it works pretty well.

Just make sure you go to 02 as Three.ie and Vodafone's mobile broadband dongles are terrible.

Nah online gaming uses f all data.

You could play WOW 12 hours a day for a month and you wouldn't even use 1GB.

I think 02 offer 15Gb per month these days.

    Hello,

I just noticed all the limitations and read all the Terms of Acceptable Use. Today I watched porn. Should I be worried that I may be flagged in the system?

Some videos did not load at all.
