Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

70's Slide Photos transformed to jpegs

    Hi there
I have a box of slide photos that look like mounted negatives from the 70s that belonged to my Dad that I would really like to get onto my PC.
Can anyone tell me the best way to go about this myself? Would a scanner be of use for slides?
    Many thanks in advance

Yes, you can scan them. You can get a tray that you mount the slides into and then put the tray into the scanner. However, I'm not sure of the following things: If you need a specialised scanner/software or if there are trays for the size you're talking about.

I'm sure someone else can elaborate.

You can buy a scanner to process slides. You will most likely though need to do a bit of work to post process them to remove dust, scratches etc.
What sort of condition are they in and what sort of volumes? Might be more cost effective to have it done somewhere like Conns ?

My understanding is some flatbed scanners do it but you would need an additional attachment for the slides.
I've got a dedicated 35mm negative/slide scanner so thats what I'm used to.

You could try the Canon Canoscan 8800f

I scanned around 3,000 35mm negatives with it. Great machine. Does slides as well (didn't have any though).

For just one box, your best bet is to get a photo lab to do it for you. They can put them on a disc.

Doing a quick google search came up with: http://www.eceltic.ie/Slide_Scanning.asp?Page=36

Never dealt with them, have no idea of pricing or quality, just do a search on slide scanning Dublin and ring around.

For a large quantity it might be better to get a slide scanner and DIY.

If you are not too fussed about the quality and have a digital camera or a mobile phone, you can do this:

    Dhows62.jpg

Which is basically just getting a white sheet of paper lit by the sun, holding the slide in one hand almost edge on to the sun with the light from the paper reflecting through the slide, then put the phone or camera in macro mode and find the closest distance it will focus and try and hold both very steady as you take a pic.

I took this one with my phone.

    Your options are:

    1. Send to a lab in Ireland and get them to scan them for you
    2. Send to a lab in the UK and get them to scan them for you
    3. Get a flat bed scanner with slide attachment (have a look at Epson V500 to V750).
    4. Get a dedicated slide scanner (have a look at Plustek 7600i)
    5. Get a lightbox (or on the cheap sellotape slide to window) and photograph with a macro lens (on a tripod)
    6. If you are near Tallaght in Dublin hire the scanner and use on site at www.ruared.ie

Scanners with ICE or equivalent are nice as they help to remove dust etc. from images

Thanks everyone for all the replies.
II had a look at scanners and made a few phone calls, an amaing difference in price when shopping around! Getting them scanned by a local printers for 1/3 of the price I was first quoted.
    Thanks again!
