Hip Irons for a house roof?

Just wondering about this,after a chat with an English friend of mine about roofing. Do roofers use hip irons over here when doing a roof of an existing house or a new build. only when asked i think hip irons look well under the ridge tiles of a hip. lot of ridge capping used now a days on slated roofs.
