The 7D also has an exceptional autofocus and large full coverage pentaprism viewfinder. I moved from a 350D to a 7D and it's a whole new world.
The 60D has the same pentamirror viewfinder as the xxxD so it's a but small and dark.

The 7D is also weather sealed with a magnesium alloy body where as the 60D has been downgraded to plastic.

7D seems like the right choice for me then. Would preder to pay extra for the metal body and weather sealing and better autofocus. Now to price around

Know i've been asking a lot of questions here, but I think this should be the last. I was all sold on a D5000, but am considering going second hand for over half the price for a Canon EOS 350D, would the Nikon be a huge step up from that? I won't be replacing, upgrading or buying anything else for a long while I'd say, except maybe a new lens, so is the 5000 the better option?

  • Registered Users Posts: 241 ✭✭muppet01

I'm standing on the fence right now between these two. Roughly the same price.

The 40d comes with a 50mm prime and has moderate use.

The D3100 is brand new and comes with a 18-55 VR lense.

Mainly going to be used just for still photography so the 40d's 6fps burst would be awesome (as opposed to the D3100's 3fps).

On the same hand, the D3100 HD recording and HDMI output would make for some interesting videos and make showing them on my TV at home easy as pie.

It's for personal use, so holidays, family occasions, sight seeing, and general tomfoolery will be what it shall mostly be used for.

Just picked up a d3100 and added a 45mbs extreme sd card.Very happy with it for a beginner.its worth going for the higher mb's card for sharper pics

I bought mine from Kerso, he's been mentioned enough times in this thread.
Bear in mind weather sealing is only useful if you have weather sealed lenses...

Not sure I agree with burying threads about specific products ("I have a 400D, would a 40D be a wise upgrade?") in a general/generic thread ("what camera should I get for my holidays/dad/space-voyage").

Personally, if I had to trawl through 70+ pages, hoping I'd find something about the product I was interested in... well, I simply wouldn't.

IMO, a product-specific query should stand alone, as an independent thread.

That's sort of the point. The entire thread isn't meant to be read. Post a question, follow it until the q is answered (hours at most I find) and then ignore it until you have another question. The forum would be flooded with 2-3 reply threads without the sticky.

    Hi all,

As the thread title says, I'm looking for a 35mm Single Lens Reflex Film Camera with manual mode.

I'd be looking to buy it brand new, so I'm just wondering if anyone could direct me to where I could buy one.

I also don't know anything about these (brother needs one for college) so if you could point out the exact make and model I'd need that would be much appreciated.

    Thanks all :)

i don't know if there are any being made which are new?
secondhand is the best way to go. you'll find loads in the shops.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 10,518 Mod ✭✭✭✭5uspect

You can still get them new, like the EOS 1V. But there are so many second hand ones out there...

adverts.ie has loads of Film based SLR's for sale and you'll usually get a lens or two with them as well.

Brand New, you're looking at what's now very specialist gear whereas secondhand you can get great cameras that have simply fallen out of fashion / have been technologically by-passed by the advent of digital (depending on your point of view).

i see nikon still have two models, the F6 and FM10, and vivitar have a model too. but irish shops probably wouldn't keep them in stock, i suspect.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,152 ✭✭✭Cakes.

I'm actually looking for one too. I was in Camera Exchange the other day and he had a few, I'm bidding on eBay and looking on Adverts.ie too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,319 ✭✭✭sineadw

Gunns have them, or at least they did a few months ago. Vivitar I think? If you want new that's the way to go :)

im selling one at the moment because i never use it, but im not sure if i really want to sell! id probably regret it.:P

I wouldn't bother going new, you'll get much more camera for your money if you look for a second hand one. If you're looking for something a bit more like a modern SLR with AF and stuff too, look at the Canon eos range. I picked up an Eos 33 in Camera Exchange for around 80 quid a year ago, it hasn't had as much use as I thought it would but it's a nice little camera.

However, it sounds like you might be angling towards a more traditional, mechanical camera, in which case I'd recommend something like an Olympus OM, Nikon FE or Canon AE-1. You should be able to get any of those off the net with a lens for less than 200 euro. I recently bought a Nikon FE off ebay for 120 with a 50mm f/1.8 Nikkor lens, can't wait for it to arrive. Good luck with the purchase!

@ Muppet - higher capacity memory cards don't yield sharper pics, they simply allow the storing of more pics. Even faster memory cards don't yield sharper pics - they just allow faster transfer of pics from buffer to memory. Don't mean to nit-pick, just don't want folk to be misled.

Ahhh, so there is some logic there. I presume lots of 2-3 reply threads is in some way worse than a single 73-page thread? Server memory? More hassle to maintain/moderate? Fair enough, I guess. From a user's perspective (rather than a mod's perspective), I'd rather a specific thread for a question like "is model xxx a good upgrade from my model yyy?", but a generic thread for "what model compact camera/dslr/tripod/whatever?" is apropriate. Basically, a question about a specific product could be stand-alone, and a generic, non-product-specific question should be in a generic thread. How's that sound?

I've settled to get a Canon 550D sometime this month. My only problem is where? I've read a lot of good reviews and comments about ConnsCameras, are they any good with price? and is their any shops in Dublin which are better/similar with service and after care.
    Thanks,
    D.B.

(Sorry mods if this in the wrong with advertising and all that)

I use the DR-2 for events. Very comfortable and the attachment mechanism is good and tough.

Not overly pricey IMO, I bought direct from the manufacturer.

Higher capacity cards and/or faster cards have zero influence on the sharpness of an image.

However, if the card you have can't write data from HD video quick enough you may end up losing frames... for stills the camera will stop shooting when the buffer is full.

For what it's worth Gunns on Wexford street is my favorite place to buy locally. Always impeccable service.

Hi! I hope you had a good weekend.
I would like to get my my sister a quality digital camera as a birthday present.
I would like to spend around 100 euro but could go up to 150 if required.

Could you recommend a really good digital camera for this price?
Where would be the best place to buy it?
I live in the Sutton area of Dublin's Northside!

    Thank you,

    Arequipa.

You won't get a quality camera for €100 but you should get a basic one that should take adequate shots. Do you want a compact point and shoot or something more complicated?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,031 ✭✭✭Arequipa

Hey! Thanks for reply! I would be looking for a compact, point & shoot digital camera; minimum 10 mega pixel.
Just a solid camera for taking family photos, holiday snaps, videos etc.
I have a canon ixus and it is a good all rounder!

    Arequipa.

Well then I would suggest you stick what you know:
    http://www.argos.ie/static/Product/partNumber/5592764/c_1/1|category_root|Photography|14419436/c_2/2|14419436|Digital+cameras|14419441/c_3/3|cat_14419441|Advanced+compact+digital+cameras|26695340.htm

That way you can show your sister how use use it and help her with any issues.
Of course you'll probably need a memory too.

don't use the megapixel count as a basis on which to judge a camera.
unless they will be doing big prints or doing heavy crops, the resolution will not be too important.

The reason for this thread is that there was a lot of feedback that this should be a Photography Forum rather than a Camera Forum. In the lead up to Christmas each year we get a lot of camera recommendation requests. It was suggested we put those all together into one thread. After Christmas it was decided to keep that going. It lets the main forum concentrate more on Photographs rather than Gear. It is actually not easier from the Moderation point as a lot of people blast into a forum without looking at how it's run first. We then have to move the threads into here. Hope that explains why this thread exists like it does.

Hi. I've been looking at the compact superzoom cameras and think I've found a Sony that I like. My problem is that when looking at the canon cameras I love the special features - miniaturisation, fish eye and toy camera effects. Now can these effects be achieved on a Sony? I know the Sony I'm looking at has background defocus but I'd love to be able to do these effects on the Sony. Thanks
