    Hi,

    Without going into the whole 'licensing' debate- I was told I need to do a training course to obtain my license. My local firearms Officer didn't tell me this and just told me to put in what experience etc I have shooting a shotgun to date. He never mentioned any formal training.

    Anyone shed any light?

    Thanks in advance...

    If you have not held a license previously for the particular type of firearm you are applying for then you must complete a competency course for that firearm.

    The following are organisations that run the courses (or some of them) you need;

    MNSCI

    NARGC

    FASS
    Forum Charter - Useful Information - Photo thread: Hardware - Ranges by County - Hunting Laws/Important threads - Upcoming Events - RFDs by County

    Simple answer is if your FAO or Super says you do, you do. If they are willing to accept your 'experience' you don't have to.

    However, it is a good idea to do it anyway.

    It's compulsory to provide proof of your competence with the firearm. The Garda Commissioner's guidelines suggest that there are a number of ways of doing this:

    1. Length of time holding a firearms licence
    2. Membership of a club for a year or more
    3. Possession of a training licence
    4. A competency course.
