Just getting off the plane near Etna and about to pop my lava proof kettle on the sumit! :D My other computer got a virus or something and died earlier so I missed the best of the live show while trying to get this up and running. It's like something from the Flintstones with me pedaling madly just to change a page. You'd never think I got upgraded to 20 whatsits by UPC today. I'm like a dog. Just looking for photos and things.

Here's a flicker link to Boris Behncke's photos. It looks gorgeous.

And some screen shots from Diana.

Off to see what's happening in Japan.

Must say, I did wonder why you werent on.:)

I was watching it for a few hours last night, beautiful. Looked like molten white glass sliding down the mountain.

Theres a nice pic in the daily mail too. Scroll down, the video is excellent.

    Here's an interesting article.

    Morgan Hill Times
A noticeable 4.5-magnitude earthquake rocked several area residents out of sleep at 12:51 this morning, marking the second and third quakes in 12 hours to strike the region.

The quake was centered six miles southeast of San Juan Bautista, eight miles southwest of Hollister and occurred at a depth of 5.2 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey website.

Jim Berkland, an 80-year-old retired "maverick" geologist whose public prediction of the devastating 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake (also known as the World Series quake) earned him a two-month suspension from his job as Santa Clara County geologist, predicts more to come with high chances of shakes March 20.

"This is an extremely strong period here; it's going to culminate in March," he told the Dispatch today from his Glen Ellen home.

Wednesday morning's earthquake was felt as far away as San Jose, which also experienced a 4.1-magnitude temblor at 4:10 p.m. Friday. That earthquake's epicenter was 11 miles north of Morgan Hill.

Wednesday morning's episode was followed by 17 aftershocks reported on the USGS website, including a magnitude-3.4 earthquake that occurred at 1 a.m. about five miles from San Juan Bautista. The last aftershock hit at 6:09 a.m.

Between Saturday and today, there has been a moderate swarm of small earthquakes occurring in areas between San Jose and San Juan Bautista according to USGS website.

Residents in Hollister said after this morning's initial jolt at 12:51 a.m., the ground seemed to roll for several more seconds.

Workers at Mi Pueblo Food Center and Safeway on First Street in Gilroy said the temblor caused no damaged to their facilities and that nothing fell off the shelves.

Sgt. Chad Gallacinao with the Gilroy Police Department said neither the GPD or the Gilroy Fire Department received any report of injuries or significant damage.

Susan Garcia, public information specialist for the Earthquake Science Center at the USGS, said the earthquake likely happened near the San Andreas fault, which dissects Hecker Pass halfway between Gilroy and Watsonville and sandwiches Santa Clara County with another fault inland.

"In the mountains to the west, you have the San Andreas Fault; to the east, you have the Calaveras Fault," explained David Oppenheimer, a seismologist and manager of the Northern California Earthquake Hazards Team.

As for Berkland's prediction he explained during March, the moon would make its closest approach to the earth in the past five years.

"Historically, there are three months that are the most prolific for damaging earthquakes in the Bay Area," he said. "March, April and October."

Berkland told the Dispatch Oct. 13, 1989 he expected an 85 percent chance for a 6.5 to 7-magnitude earthquake to occur in the coming week. Four days later, a major earthquake struck the San Francisco Bay area.

Berkland, who was a Santa Clara County geologist from 1973 to 1994, said the temblor action could be happening between March 19 and March 26.

"It's an earthquake-prone period," he said. "The odds are increased."

To this, Garcia said there is a one in five chance of a magnitude-6.7 or greater event on the San Andreas Fault system in the next 30 years.

It will be scary if he is. It's astonishing the amount of geologists and other scientist types there seem to be who won't travel/stay/work in that part of the world without an emergency bag with rations and supplies for 2-3 months. A lot of them have upped sticks and moved to places like Florida even though the work there would not be as interesting. It says something to me.

    And from the horse's mouth:

BORIS BEHNCKE on January 14, 2011, 9:41 AM (Eruptions Blog)

Back from another day of field work on Etna, I can say that the volcano is quiet for the moment but there is emission of some bluish fumes from the Southeast Crater’s eastern pit – that’s the vent that produced the paroxysm yesterday night – and usually such fumes indicate that magma is not far away from the surface. We also know that lava fountains at Etna almost never come alone, they love company :-D

So everyone here thinks that we will rather see a whole sequence of similar events in the next few days to weeks maybe to months, which would obviously be a great delight to all of us. Our web technicians are working on a mirror site to buffer the hilarious assault of web visitors, which yesterday have brought the INGV-Catania web site down on its knees throughout much of the day, because if this activity continues, things will get more intense, web-wise.

And then, I posted the first of a series of videos of the 12-13 January 2011 paroxysm on Youtube; this one shows the onset of the lava fountain as seen from my home. I will now post a few more videos taken during my frantic drive from one viewing point to the next at the height of the lava fountain … stay tuned.

Looks like the road did, near where one of my sisters lives, between Ballymurphy and Kiltealy in Carlow/Wexford after Jan '10 frost and snow. :D

Poor people living around Merapi trying to get their lives some way sorted and back to normalish and having to contend with those cold floods while they are doing that. :(

Massive and extremely dangerous earthquake in Pakistan

January 18, 2011 By Armand Vervaeck and James Daniell

UPDATE 22:12 UTC : According to theoretical disaster models, this earthquake could have from 0 to 200 casualties
UPDATE 22:12 UTC : Xinhua brings out the first damage reports : houses damaged in Quetta, capital city of Balochistan province. A three-story building
collapsed in Karachi. Both cities are far away from the epicenter.
UPDATE 22:04 UTC : The villages who are located closest to the epicenter are : Chakul, Merui and Nuhli. The deeper the hypocenter the less important are the villages just above it.
In the case of a shallow earthquake, these villages would have the highest risk.
UPDATE 21:59 UTC : The epicenter is located at a distance of approx. 60 km from the Pakistan / Afghanistan border in the Chagai District.
Chagai District is the largest district of Pakistan and is located on the north west corner of Balochistan, Pakistan. It forms a triangular border with Afghanistan and Iran. Pakistan conducted a nuclear weapons test in 1998 at Ras Koh Hills Chagai District.
UPDATE 21:55 UTC : Local media are reporting that the epicenter is in a thin populated area and that so far no injuries or damage has been recorded. Earthquake-report.com will only make such statements if we have very trustworthy sources confirming that NO damage or Injuries have been experienced in the epicenter area.
UPDATE 21:50 UTC : The earthquake was felt in very remote places like Dubai and New Delhi. The strength of the earthquake combined with the depth of the hypocenter are the main reasons why this earthquake was felt so far.
UPDATE 21:32 UTC : Pakistan media are locating the epicenter at 55 km from Dalbandin (population 14,621 people)
UPDATE 21:32 UTC : 109,000 people will have experienced a potentially MMI VII shaking = severe shaking (data USGS)
UPDATE 21:30 UTC : We call this earthquake contrary to GDACS who has issued a GREEN earthquake report (no or little damage), still VERY DANGEROUS, as Pakistan is very vulnerable for earthquakes and as the earthquake occurred in a mountainous area.
UPDATE 21:28 UTC : The earthquake will be felt in a vast area as the hypocenter is at a depth of 84 km
UPDATE 21:25 UTC : MMI VI to VII will be experienced in the greater epicenter area
UPDATE 21:20 UTC : USGS has decreased the Magnitude of the earthquake from M 7.4 to M 7.2
UPDATE 21:16 UTC : Major change in the outcome of the earthquake. USGS has just changed the depth of the hypocenter from 10 to 84 km, a world of difference !!!!!
Very shallow and extremely dangerous earthquake in South-Western Pakistan.
The earthquake happened at night which makes the shaking even more dangerous.
Preliminary data are showing very different data which can be the difference in between a light shaking and a dramatic outcome. (depth difference in between USGS and EMSC)
    Most important Earthquake Data:
    Magnitude : 7.4
UTC time : Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at 20:23:17 UTC
Local time at epicenter : January 19, 2011 at 01:23:17 AM at epicenter
    Depth (Hypocenter) : 10 km !!!!!
Quake-maps.com satellite map + I Did Feel It form
    Geo-location(s) :
45 km (25 miles) W of Dalbandin, Pakistan (pop 14,621)
280 km NW Khuzdar (pop 141,227)

Earthquake swarm in Pozzuoli: alarm and fear
    Old and inadequate evacuation plans

Pozzuoli - The earthquake swarm reported yesterday morning in the Campi Flegrei by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, centered Pozzuoli, topical reports the problem of updating the municipal civil defense plans and escape routes. "Flegrea Pozzuoli and the Municipalities of the entire area, one of the highest volcanic risk in the world, are not provided with appropriate local civil defense plans or, at best, but there are plans date back to the early 80 '.

The warning comes from the core of civil defense volunteers' Association national police "coordinated by Alfonso Trincone of Pozzuoli, a former police officer and cousin of the same name Carabinieri officer killed in Nasiriyah in 2003. In practice, Pozzuoli everything is still the 'emergency plan and evacuation in the event of eruption in the area flegrea', drafted in 1984 following the second bradiseismic crisis.

    16 quakes rock Taal
    16 quakes rock Taal

    Published : Saturday, April 16, 2011 00:00 Article Views : 79

ALERT level 2 remained hoisted over restive Taal Volcano after it emitted a large increase of carbon dioxide concentration apart from registering 16 volcanic quakes in the last 24 hours, the Philippine Volcanology and Seismology said yesterday.

Phivolcs said the public is reminded that the Main Crater, Daang Kastila Trail and Mt. Tabaro are strictly off-limits. It placed the entire volcano island in a permanent danger zone status.

Permanent settlement at this point is strictly not recommended since gas measurements have increased indicating magma has been intruding towards the surface which results in increased magma seismic activity.

Phivolcs said that breathing air with high concentration of gases can be lethal to humans and animals and can cause damage to vegetation.

In its 7 a.m. bulletin, Phivolcs said that gas measurements at Taal’s Main Crater Lake still showed a large increase in carbon dioxide in March with 4,670 tons per day compared to the 2,250 and 1,875 tons a day in the January and February emission.

Aside from the gas emission, state volcanologists also noted an increase in water temperature at the Main Crater Lake from 29.8 to 30.1 degrees Celsius. Joel dela Torre

    Puyehue Volcano

Puyehue volcano in Chile has erupted. It looks like it may be a fairly major event. It's only been a couple of hours and it's already darkened over 90km away from it.

Appologies if this has been posted already but i just read an article which referred to Katla. It said it is expected to errupt anytime in the next 3 years as it usually erupts after Eyjafjallajokul does.It said when it errupted in 1721 and 1755 it spread ash all over the ground in Ireland and mainland Europe destroying crops and darkened the skies there for months after aswell. Was wondering is it expected to errupt with similar force and thus results this time around?

That is a question you should really ask the experts. Here are links to two volcano blogs where those in the know can be very helpful. Just don't give them the idea that you're a 2012'er. :D

    Eruptions blog at Big Think

Jon Frimann's Iceland Volcano and Earthquake blog

However, I think the general run of answer will be that nobody knows. Volcanoes are forces of nature and nobody can predict with any great accuracy how nature will behave. Also that two swallows don't make a Summer.

Interesting report here. Saying there could be a rift in the earth 6 miles long and 2 1/2 wide.

Authorities initially said the Puyehue volcano was involved, but later said the eruption was occurring about 2 1/2 miles (four kilometers) from that peak. A rift more than six miles (10 kilometers) long and three miles (five kilometers) across was torn in the earth’s crust, officials said Saturday night.
