    Your ping is the time it requires for a packet to reach a client and a response to be received, connecting to different places will give different ping times and all you know is that both servers you connecting to are in Dublin both are right.

    i wouldn't rely on pingtest.net for any reliable results, mainly because its inconsistent and....well....not very reliable.

    A reliable ping test on a particular route is tricky as some routers if directly pinged in a Tracroute de-prioritise the ICMP to avoid DDOS. Similarly some servers ignore it completely.

    I usually ping www.heanet.ie. But if want to see congestion on routes to UK or US I'll ping a variety of servers to get an idea.
    C:\WINDOWS>ping www.heanet.ie -t

    Pinging samhain.heanet.ie [193.1.219.57] with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 193.1.219.57: bytes=32 time=46ms TTL=59
    Reply from 193.1.219.57: bytes=32 time=21ms TTL=59
    Reply from 193.1.219.57: bytes=32 time=21ms TTL=59
    Reply from 193.1.219.57: bytes=32 time=23ms TTL=59
    Reply from 193.1.219.57: bytes=32 time=41ms TTL=59
    Reply from 193.1.219.57: bytes=32 time=17ms TTL=59
    Reply from 193.1.219.57: bytes=32 time=19ms TTL=59

    Ping statistics for 193.1.219.57:
        Packets: Sent = 7, Received = 7, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
    Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
        Minimum = 17ms, Maximum = 46ms, Average = 26ms
    Control-C

    First ping is usually longer. WiFi may add 1ms to 10ms

    It's not nowadays a very useful or accurate test. But will give you the "ball park". I.e. if EVERYTHING in Dublin is over 100ms your Broadband is very congested or you are not on Broadband at all (3G Mobile, Ripwave, Imagine WiMax, Clearwire etc). Satellite should add about 800ms to "ping". Mobile can go out to 2000ms.
