Vodafone speed problems? Dump the router they gave you.

After all of my advice my friend went and fell for the farce that is Vodafone.
He found he wasnt getting the speed he used to get with Eircom (thousands of posts about this on boards).

So after being onto vodafone every day for the last week and they just kept fobbing him off he asked me to have a look at it.

So I checked the stats with his modem that vodafone sent him. Tested the speed and he was getting exactly half what he used to get with Eircom.

I plugged his old Eircom router in. Configured it for vodafone and guess what.
He got the stats and the speeds he used to get with eircom.

    Vodafone have hobbled their routers.

My advice to him was to just ditch vodafones router and use his old eircom router with it. Or just ditch vodafone for such underhanded tactics.

So for anyone else not getting their old speeds after transferring to vodafone. Just use another router instead of vodafones.

Can you give an idea of stats (imputing distance from exchange) and real distance from exchange and the package he has ??

There is a firmware update for those routers - fixes a few issues including connection drops and low speeds.

I was having similar issues - the new firmware clears up many sure.

Just one thing about measuring speed. Always test while connected via an ethernet cable (disable any wireless during the test) and always make sure that your computer is the only device connected to the router while testing the broadband speed.

Sometimes you can end up with poor speed test results simply because of wireless issues which are nothing to do with the available broadband speed.

Yes it was tested wired direct to the router.
Now most of us here would be able to update firmware, but most people I know wouldnt be capable of doing this. So its kinda unfair on average joe public.

Also they send out router models where you cant update the firmware.

All in all very bad form from vodafone.
