I live in the Netherlands and tbh most Americans I meet pretend to be Canadian.

I was talking to an American girl once in a bar in Oslo and she knew I was from Ireland.

She asked "So have you ever been to Europe"

    *facepalm*

Depends where their from really, but they have some funny ideas about Europeans, i.e. Their usually surprised to find out that in Ireland we have toilets indoors and not all houses have thatched roofs.

If I hear another American banging on about how small our cars are i'll go on a shooting rampage.

Seriously? They spend all their time hating on Canada, then try to call themselves Canadians? Why?

    Grrragh.

It's probably best to form your own opinions of us when you come over. Obviously we're just wonderful here but you need to decide that yourself! ;)

    In answer to your queries:

    1. No. I've heard a number of different US accents and I've liked what I've heard so far.

    2. I've never encountered a stuck-up American yet. Or if I did, they didn't make an impression on me!

    3. I don't think it matters where you go. But yeah stay away anyway!

    4. I think they are very open and approachable. I don't think there's anything unattractive about them as a whole.

    5. I met one. She broke my heart. True story!

They usually wear tops. hats or backpacks with a big feckin maple leaf on them.

Think its something to do with the Terrorists:

Edit, jesus christ ... who wrote this bollocks
Wear the same swimwear as the locals. In many countries it is common for men to wear Speedos on the beach or pool. In some European countries, like France and Belgium, men are even required by law to wear a Speedo in public pools: Wearing a swim short is forbidden. Also, wearing a swimming cap is required for both men and women in some countries.

    I don't even own a pair of speedos ..
Avoid walking down the street while eating food; this is against proper etiquette in most countries.

Walking home at 4am with a Kebab is normal in most of europe.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. You immediately see through the Americans pretending to be Canadians. They keep forgetting to put 'eh?' at the end of sentences.

I much prefer talking to American women than Irish, Any time I can have a conversation that doesn't revolve around whether you're "From the Northsoide or the Southsoide" is always nice.

    (1) Don't confuse DUBLIN women with all IRISH women.
    (2) Try getting out of Dublin and you might meet such women....in fact don't....stay there stay insular, small minded...and away from the rest of us!! MUPPET!

To OP....come to Ireland, in general you'll find Irish men want the same as any other nationality.... some of after 'only one thing' others are reasonably nice guys who want to give it a chance...
Some will like the accent, others won't. Be warned though, it is part of the national psyche to not be as openly communicative/upfront as tends to be the case in America. Your greatest relationships issue here will probably be the dependance on the pub/drinking culture to (1) meet, (2) socialise & (3) retain many-though not all- of those relationships.

Good luck with it and don't obsess on it too much!

American girls are great fun. They seem a lot more chilled out and relaxed compared to a lot of Irish women. Probably because they don't consider Sex and the City as Inspiration...

    American girls are great.
Easy to chat up (I mean that in a good way) and a good laugh.

    1. Nope! southern accents are the only attractive accents in the US. All the other accents sound plain to my ear. The Boston accent in revolting though.
    2. Nope. I've found Americans very friendly.
    3. Better yet, stay out of Dublin altogether ;).
    4. Women are difficult creatures to understand no matter where they're from!
    5. I got talking to this lovely gal on the Subway in Manhattan. We were getting on like a house on fire! Coincidentally We both got off at grand central station & she asked me if I'd carry her big heavy suitcase into the station for her. Being the gent that I am I obliged & we chatted while we walked all the way into the station. It was simply magical! Did I mention she was about seventy?:D True story though.

    1. Does the southern accent get on your nerves?
Definitely not, is one of my favourite accent

    2.You think were stuck up.
A lot of americans I have met definitely come across that way

3.Should I definately stay away from temple bar if I dont want some guy hitting me up because he wants a one night stand with a foreigner?
Yes, Chances are you will be hit on by an English fella there anyway

    4. What do you find attractive about american women or unattractive (please leave out the fact that alot of american are fat, lol)?
big hair, shoulder pads, oxycotton etc

    1. Does the southern accent get on your nerves?
No, I consider it a major plus, I especially love the whole southern demeanour

    2.You think were stuck up.

No, I find American women to be great like this (especially compared to Irish women) all nationalities have some stuck up people but the Americans are not bad like this I think.

3.Should I definately stay away from temple bar if I dont want some guy hitting me up because he wants a one night stand with a foreigner?
It depends on what ya want out of your holiday, if you want my advice don't spend all your time and Dublin and come out to the country, you'll have a great time and it is more representative of Ireland not some fake D4 types you'll find in Dublin who wish they could weld Dublin onto mother England.

    4. What do you find attractive about american women or unattractive (please leave out the fact that alot of american are fat, lol)?
I find American women to be very attractive, their accents, and general outlook on life is great, plus they are far more open and liberal than Irish women.

    5. a story about when you met an american women?
I have met a good shot and had mainly positive experiences with all involved, having been to Las Vegas more than once, they have left a very positive impression on me.

    1. Love all American accents; the more distinguished, the better.

    2. Ive met plenty of American women while in a University over there for a while and only a few were stuck up. More of a general ignorance about the world but majority very sound.

    3. Do you want to get over-charged food and drink while having some gang of English stag-weekenders stare at your boobs all night? If so, Temple Bar is the place to be!

    4. American women seem to have a much more open way of expressing and are alot easier to talk to. Great that they adore my accent so half the work is done for me. Drop dead gorgeous too.:D

    5. Plenty stories, had a stalker. That was creepy but flattering!

And OP, saw your pic. You shouldnt have many problems finding a decent guy ;)

Honestly, I have heard different things of what to expect when going to Ireland.
I'm not going to Ireland to hook up with anyone, but how can you go to another country and not be abit interested in the opposite sex?
I want answers, straight forward and through some other stuff in there if you would like. Just getting an overview of it all. I definately expect to here some banter on here, so bombs away. ;)

****, desecrating our noble maple leaf with their Americanness. :pac:

I reckon it's more because Americans have such a horrid reputation abroad and Canadians are apparently (from what people tell me, anyway) known for being overly nice and have a much more favourable reputation.

Either way, I'm not sure I'm comfortable with the idea of Americans masquerading as Canadians :(

On my mother's side of the family, she has a sister living in Toronto, and a sister living in Seattle, Washington. Whenever the two families get together, it's incredibly entertaining. Especially since the American family are fundamentalist christian Republicans.

Agree with the Candian thing, 95% of Candians I have met were extremely friendly (some VERY friendly!). Next thing you know, the English will start pretending to be Irish. Anarchy on the way :D

As for the OP, I have found American girls to be a mixed bag. Some very nice, some middling and one particularly horrible girl. So much like everywhere else really. American girls can be very outgoing and more open-minded so that is often a good thing. They love my accent too so that is always a good thing in a country! The Southern accent is my joint favourite with the Jersey accent (Jersey accents just sound funny!). The Southern Belle accent sounds pretty good to foreign ears.

    Disagree.

Really? Is it a trend you've noticed?

Strange. Any time people find out I'm Canadian they inevitably know a bunch of other Canadians from god knows where and then go on about how overly nice/polite they were.

It's kind of funny hearing about your own nationality's stereotypes sometimes.

It is true some are friendly enough; I don't think all Canadians are like that though, having lived there I met a few arseholes. I suppose you get them everywhere anyway. I find Americans a lot friendlier and easygoing than Canadians. We are portrayed as drunken idiots all over the world and America is portrayed as dumb. Both are far from the truth in my experience.

Bollocks to you. When In actual fact it's true. I've been the one to kick people out of pools on the continent for wearing swimming trunks as opposed to speedo-types. A lot of non-foreign orientated resorts/pools will have this rule, particularly common in France.

Some swiming pools in France have a speedo rental shop at the pool. Who would want to swim that badly?

If you think about how many Irish girls style themselfs on all things Americana be they models ,actresses or singers over the last few decades and how the American accent has somehow..... evolved and being adopted by some Irish people ( being quite a few threads about this ) who may have lived in America for some time , then it's a good perception of how American women are percieved In Ireland . Generally speaking and from my own expierence of meeting American women in Ireland and abroad , I have always found them to be polite, friendly, stylish ...very good looking , and great fun to be around . And some of those southern girls can drink anybody under the table :)

    2. Irish girls are way more stuck up.
    3. Stay away from Temple Bar. Save yourself the money and go to other, genuine places in Dublin.
    4. Yez are a lot more approachable and friendly than most Irish girls.

American girls are as much fun as the Irish, and less likely to be stuck up and pretentious. They can be more vacuous and crass, but there's plenty of Irish girls that are the same.
