Odd. What's the make and model number of the TV?

Can't find the model but it's an Alba, with a DVD player built in.

Did a bit more checking. The message is gone now. When you turn on the tv, the remote will turn it on. It'll respond to button presses for about 3 seconds, then freezes, responding to nothing but the switch on the wall. It's as if it just freezes, like a pc.
Those 3 seconds are not long enough to get to the auto scan unfortunately

Try it with the aerial unplugged. It might give you a chance to do a factory reset

Hi we have an Alba tv/dvd in our bedroom that did the same thing this morning and my wife just powered it off at the wall until I came home, What I did to unfreeze it was,
    1. power it off at the wall for a few seconds.
    2. turn power back on.
    3. pressed the power button on the tv and quickly pressed the source button the souce menu came up.
I could then use the remote to get into the menu and do a restart all seems ok now.

Then I did the first idea, in conjunction with the second and it worked fine.

Cheers lads, got me out of a hole there. :D

Maybe its something with the Alba tvs when you do this rescan.

    Hi All

I think I am similar experiences as others -- but most of you guys seem to getting issues resolved but I don't seem to be.

Am in Drogheda area - two tvs - One is Saorview ready TV and other uses Saorview box . On Sunday (20th) I had all the Saorview channels + 3 Test screens and Freeview Lite from Kilkeel working ok.

On Monday I did rescan (numerous times) on all, even reset to factory settings/ first time install and got the following results

    Saorview ready TV
After each rescan it gets the same 19 Irish (TV and Radio) channels that were before but - RTE 1 is now on channel 11 and Rte Jr is 17 -- no sign of any new channels such as RTE 1 HD
For the channels that are there, the signal very mixed - it can be fine for a while but then go all jittery and unwatchable.

    Saorview box

Rescans is very mixed bag -- did a number of complete rescans on Monday and each time it comes up with No channels at all. On Tuesday I did another rescan and it got 19 Irish (TV and Radio) channels (but channels not incorrect order) and while watchable for a while, it went all jittery and unwatchable. When I did another Rescan - it found no channels at all.

As mentioned I live in Drogheda -- my ariel is a Grid one, same used since we moved in to house 10 years ago, is like one in link below, and is pointing to Claremont Carn

Any one else in the Louth area have same issue and did they get it fixed and can they get Saorview channels and Freeview Lite working ok

    regards

Looks like you have a signal problem. Aerials mounted outdoors rust very quickly. It may also now not be suitable or pointed correctly for new Muxes. I would recommend paying an installer up to 200 Euro for an aerial or aerials to pick up Saorivew and Freeview. It may now be impossible to get Freeview from Northern Ireland at your location as it may be on the same frequency as a Mux 2 transmission from another location you are picking up. As the setup of combined freeview and Saorview can get quite complex, with specialised masthead preamplifiers and combiners, it's best left to a professional. You have 2 to 3 weeks to get this done before RTE1 on channel 11 is turned off.

Try manually scanning each UHF channel: channel 52 (722 mHz) for Saorview mux. 1, ch. 56 (754 mHz) for mux. 2. On an auto scan, your receivers might have been finding a weak signal from Three Rock, as it uses channels lower in the UHF band.

For Freeview: ch. 45 (666 mHz) is the BBC A mux., ch. 42 (642 mHz) is D3 & 4 (ITV, C4 etc.), ch.39 (618 mHz) is the BBC B HD mux., which your tv may or may not be able to handle, depending on spec. Would I be right in thinking that you never had a good Freeview signal?

  • Registered Users Posts: 14 Brian_Lo

Think I tried the manual retune but may as well try again

We had a reasonably good freeview (lite) reception from Kilkeel since last oct -- only time it didn't work was in Summer

I have a horrible feeling it is the Grid Ariel that needs to be replaced -- but loads of houses in Drogheda have them so am curious if any one in the area with Grid one and has got all channels (Irish and UK)they had before since the retune

The grid aerial is a wideband UHF aerial of moderate gain: as with any aerial, it should only be installed where it will prove up to the job. If it was really good enough before the retune, it will still be good enough now.

The bust solution for UK stations in Dublin is to get them via Satellite and use Freesat. It may be possible to pick it up in some parts of Dublin. Have a look at all your neightbours houses and see if any have two aerials or one very big one. This is a sign someone is picking up a signal from Wales or the North. However even if it does work it will only be 90% reliable causing headaches during any good weather. It can be handy for some channels not on Freesat but on Freeview but in general, in Dublin, it's not worth the trouble. There are far, far more channels for free on Satellite

I'm in Drogheda with Grid too and like yourself I've lost a few of UK freeview channels.

Hi all it was the Ariel. Had someone look at it today and said the antenna (Red box) was in missing cover and he replaced it. So did a retune and all channels I had last week are back. Happy days !!

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 4,285 ✭✭✭Peter Rhea

The replaced part is a 'masthead' amplifier. Power is sent up the cable from a power supply that would be in the house somewhere, probably plugged in at a tv point.

RTE1 HD which is the only new channel I'm interested in at the moment is also unwatchable for me. Signal strength seems to be jumping from 80 to 10 percent constantly accompanied by constant picture breakup.

I'm on the Kilkeaveragh transmitter, have line of sight and use rabbit ears antenna for reception. All the previous channels are fine including RTE2 HD.
Rabbit ears aerials are designed for VHF reception.

RTÉ1 HD is on a new UHF frequency so that rabbit ears aerial may be inadequate for reception of that frequency. Something like this would be more suitable - http://cpc.farnell.com/mercury/sto2/set-top-aerial-olympik-2/dp/AP00025 with the director bars orientated vertical
I got the suggested aerial. Have to admit I was a bit sceptical that it would improve matters as my previous aeriel was a UHF aerial but my scepticism was unfounded. :o
Getting 100% signal now and no picture breakup. :) It doesn't seem to make any difference if I have it orientated horizontally or vertically.

Did Mux2 go off the air last night just after midnight for about 10 mins?

I lost reception for about 10 mins, but was getting mux1.

Yes, I also noticed RTE1 HD off air for a time.

I couldn't say if the test cards were on-air before Mux2 went off-air but yes the test cards was there afterward

Hello over there -- from over here on the Welsh coast !!
This retune is causing a head ache or 2 isn't it.?
I receive Mt Leinster and use a non Saorview approved box called a View21 PVR.
Everything was working fine until Mux 2 /CH 26 came into use.
I rescanned by "channel tune","Manual channel scan" , "first time instal" and however I do it the box after 10 seconds or so removes anything on RTENL 2 leaving just RTENL 1.
If I scan on my Sony TV all channels remain although RTE1 comes up as a HD channel along with RTE2 HD but doesn't have a HD on screen logo.
As with RTE2 it is displayed on the TV as 1080/25hz.
It is going to be intersting to see what happens and the complaints that come in when RTE1 SD is apparently closed soon !!
Reading this very informative board it seems people who have approved equipement are having problems.
It can't be my signal strength as channels are initially found --- then removed .
    Very odd.
    Regards

Haven't come across that before. It must be a box specific problem as the Sony TV has no problems. What's the signal strength/quality/BER reading like for Mux2 and Mux1 on the Sony TV?

Can you change the country/region setting to Ireland on the View21 PVR during install?

The people with Saorview approved equipment having problems appear to be mostly down to aerial, cabling problems etc.

Regarding RTÉ 1 HD, no on screen DOG for a few weeks now, 1440x1080i resolution, all content upscaled, HD content in the New Year.

Edit: just noticed the DOG has returned, the HD DOG will probably appear in the new year once it carries full HD content.

RTE Radio 1 from Mullaghanish is off the air at the minute. Knockmoyle, Crosshaven and Kilkeveragh are all carrying dead air at the minute. Spur Hill is unaffected though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 603 ✭✭✭Oscarziggy

    Thanks for the reply.
The signal quality and strength are shown as "high" on the Sony with rock steady pictures just like before CH 26 came into opration.
RTE1 is showing just RTE1 as before -- thanks for the explanation.
Not possible to choose the country on the View21 --just a first time installation which does a reset to default settings and a full channel scan.
That also finds the RTE channels then 10 seconds later deletes some of them -- I can't recall what the on screen message is but something like deleting unused channels.
I'm sure all channels were there in the EPG but disappeared when I changed channels........

    Thanks for your time ...

Where does the View21 PVR store the Irish channels, in the 800s?

    The Cush.
Good morning --- yes it stores them in the 800s .
Before it deletes some, RTE1 is on 800 ,RTE2 801 etc and I can view RTE1 until I change channels.
    RTE1 then disappears from 800 ---- so does 800 !!.
Later on I will do yet another first instal but this time I will yank out the aerial plug after it has scanned CH23 and CH26 to see what happens.
I have noticed this morning that RTE1 is shown on 808 with "rescan required" in the EPG --- I assume this is the SD service??
I have this right now ---
    801 RTE2 HD
    802TV3
    803TG4
    8043e
    805 RTE NEWS NOW
    808 RTE1 rescan required
    813 RTEjr rescan required
    814 RTE1+1 rescan required
    815 RTE Radio 1
    816 to 821 Radio channels.
822 shown as a radio channel but (no information)
    823 RTEGold
    824 RTE Junior
    835 SSU (no information)
This has to be the most annoying PVR I have come across --- to get radio audio I have to go to a TV channel first then to a radio channel.
It doesn't do that on the BBC radio channels so what are you guys doing different !!!
    Regards

Both Freeview and Saorview conform to different receiver specifications is the answer I guess.

Saorview receivers must be certified to the Nordig receiver specification and Freeview receivers the D-Book spec. Pan-European brands like Sony are certified to the many different DTT standards across Europe and so can handle different regions better than a receiver designed for a single region such as your (Goodmans) View21 PVR.

You can see the Saorview/Nordig spec here - http://www.2rn.ie/broadcast/saorview-digital-tv/ (bottom of the page)
