Copying my dvd's onto my hard drive??

Im sick of constantly changing discs to watch various dvd's. This is purely for private use obviously. Im a strong believer in; You want it? PAY FOR IT!!!

- Is it legal for me to copy my dvd's that i payed for on to my hard drive?

- Is it worth copying them onto my hard drive?

- Has anyone here done this?

As far as I know its legal to backup your disks. As long as you keep your DVD's you will be ok.

To be honest if you are not sharing them nobody will ever know anyway.

I used to use DVDDecrypter to backup mine but I dont do it anymore (They stopped updating that program too so it will not always work.

If this is against the rules to post I'm with fonecrusher1 my defense is ignorance.

I used DVD decrypter as well, used to rip a full length film in about 7 minutes. That gives you the .vob files off the disc which can be between 5 and 8 GB in size. After that i used Auto Guardian Knot to convert to xvid or divx.

This takes a lot longer but could set the quality/size off the outputted video file. I used to set it by size, 225mb for a standard tv episode, 350mb for a 40 minute tv episode and 700mb to 1gb for most films depending on runtime.

It is worth it though, especially if you have something to play them on or if you are watching a tv series. I ripped the entire west wing (154 40 minute episodes), it was a pain in the arse ripping the discs, but using Auto GK afterwards i just queued up all the files and lef it working away for a couple of days. If you have a decent computer it will probably encode quicker than mine, mine took a little less than the runtime of whatever it was i was encoding (on a core2duo 2.33GHz)

Discs get scratched pretty easily, it certainly wont do any harm to have a backup.

I have pretty much my entire collection of DVDs ripped and backed up. Some of them I compressed, others I just left in the raw state (.VOB files)...just depending on time and storage space really. Try DVDFab HDDecrypter (there are paid versions, but the basic ripping app is free).

If you are going to compress them, I recommend doing a lot of research first. Tbh, HDD storage gets bigger and cheaper every year so instead of spending hundreds of hours compressing hundreds of movies, it often makes more sense to just buy another 1TB or 2TB drive.

Hey lads why is everyone saying 'backed up'??? Do you mean its copied onto your hard drive?
