A 19-year-old youth is in a critical condition following an assault in Dundalk.

The assault happened on Castle Road between 9pm and 9.30pm last night.

The young man is currently being treated at the Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda where his injuries are said to be life-threatening.

Gardaí are now appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the assault or been involved in the attack to contact them.

They say a large number of people would have travelled along Castle Road last night to attend the popular St Gerard's Novena.

An incident room has now been set up and gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them on 042 9388400.

A sad day for the people of Dundalk.

Sadly, Niall Dorr passed away yesterday.

RTE also report that 2 men are being questioned.

    May he rest in peace.

Please do not speculate over who has been arrested or any specific details relating to the case as comments such as that could jeopardize a possible prosecution.
