The olympic stadium is up a b*tch of a hill in parc montjuic. I might leave the breakfast run off for this reason even if i'd only be jogging it. Its a bit early for me too :D

Cool that is four so far then including christeb.

Im also on that flight, anyone else looking to share a Taxi? Perhaps get a 7-8 seater taxi?

My Barca hopes are still alive as today
after a week of agony I got my shoulder
    popped back into place.
Seems I mangled my arm/shoulder during my 18m last sat.
Socket out of place which nearly ruined the tendons.
Ran 6 Sunday without coping it and have been
in agony from Mon until today.

    Moral of the story:
Don't carry a bottle for over an hour
if your gait/upper body strength is dodgy

Never trust a gp to fix you properly!
Although vast quantities of drugs are welcome.

    Rant over :)

I would've said it was a gentle hill (73m climb) but one man's poison and all that. Certainly if you don't like hills, it's one to give a miss, and you won't be missing out on too much.

We headed to the Placa de la Sagrada Familia in the afternoon, and that was a hell of a lot more strenuous (but infinitely more incredible).

By the way, it's difficult to get an early morning breakfast in Barcelona, if you're staying in a hotel. Best to have some bagels and cereal on the ready.

    Maybe someone can confirm this:

I was looking at the aid stations on the marathon website; they are not giving out gels! Is this correct?

I wonder did they give them out last year?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 20,366 Mod ✭✭✭✭RacoonQueen

I dont' think they did. They had oranges and bananas at aid stations though.

Nope. They did give out cups and bottles of Powerade though. I see Powerade is a sponsor this year too, so I presume it's the same.

Thanks for the swift reply guys - Now I can go to bed and worry about my gel strategy, that I had thought up until yesterday, I had well planned out!!

Re the Powerade - would this be any way as effective as taking a gel? I know it would be a little risky to now consider taking lots of this on board having not tried it during long runs. I would imagine you would require a fair volume of Powerade to provide as much carbohaydrate as say a isogel.

Is it normal practice for major marathons to give or not to give gels out during the race?

I would never put my faith in the gels handed out during a marathon. You just can't count on them having a brand you can stomach, or if/where they are going to distribute them. Dublin is the only marathon I have participated in that hands out gels at pretty regular intervals. Berlin had one gel station at around mile 18, but it was more of a sponsorship thing, than anything particularly useful (they were handing out lots of Power gels, but no water to wash them down). Don't remember any, in NY. Find the brand you like, bring em with you. Anything else is just tempting fate.

My Barcelona dream is over as of this weekend. I tore my calf muscle 5 weeks ago - stupid hill repeats session that I pushed far too hard on. The physio (who has been brilliant) thought I might be able to get back for this weekend. I got out today. I felt fine for the first 5 miles but I only got 7 in before I had to stop exhausted. Its amazing how quickly you lose your Marathon fitness.

I'm heartbroken (mainly because I'm so tight with money!!) but I'm looking forward to heading over for the weekend anyway. I'll probably bring my runners to do the Breakfast run but after that plan to find a good spot to cheer on all the boardsies home. Roll on a May Marathon - probably Kildare, and a real assault on a sub 3:30 DCM.

How has the training gone? What's the target?

    George Payne it is then,

Training has gone well (knee acting up a bit a the moment, so trying not to force it so late in the day).

Looking forward to Barcelona now.... anything under 3.45 will be great

Cool. There's a fair chance I'll be running around that time myself given the 50k at the weekend being still in the legs (was hoping to go sub 3;30, but i'm not sure that'll be possible anymore). If you want to PM me your number I'll maybe meet up with you ebfore the race?

Also are people meeting up at the expo or doing the morning run?

I will be wearing a irish tricolour vest and white skirt so please introduce yourselves if you see me .

You might have to make your own fun for a few hours. I went there last year after the race and the place was empty (and no sign of RacoonQueen anywhere:eek:). Went back that evening and met Hot2Trot for a pint before she had to run for a plane, and the place was a lot more lively.

Christ man that's a bummer. Maybe put a messgae out on the main forum. There maybe someone who booked flights but can't go now and you could do a name swap for a small fee (think it's no more than €50).

Thats me on the way out. I'm booked on the ryanair afternoon saturday flight, but going from London on the fri now so i won't be using that flight, no bother doing a name change. That flights only 75 at the mo to book normally. I was aer lingus for the way back so cant help you there.

I was going to go with the 4 hour pacers but my latest strategy of reverse taper - doing a 50k the week before it , might scupper that a bit :o. I think I am in the 4 hour pen but will hang around the back and see what happens.
It is really a training run now , rather than a target race so I dont much mind how many hours on the feet I get. I just have to make it back to the hostel in time to shower and make the George by 2pm. Then have to sober up as I will have to drive back to Mayo at midnight and dont want to either fall asleep or be breathalyzed.

Sounds good, well done with your 50k time, great going.
You're some woman to drive to Mayo that night!

I was hoping for a 4:15 pacer as there had been before I seem to recall.
I need to do 1st half much "quicker" than 2nd, but it seems to be 4:00 or 4:30 so may have to try to sit near 4:30 as long as I can.

Yep me. I also put down 3:30 to 4:00. I am sure standing at the front of that pen won't dent your chances of sub 3:30. If the waves are anything like the Dublin half, getting to the front of a slower pen is actually better than being in the middle/back of a fster one.
Still undecided about what pace to go at. Like HTT I did the 50k at the weekend, but the legs weren't too bad tonight so sub 3:30 may still be a possibility.....No. 9709 will be wearing blue Boards AC singlet

    Thanks for the advice Krusty.
I have dug up a different Hi5 belt which has a pouch and lots of places for the gels. I put 3 iso and 3 regular gels in it and brought it round the easy 5 miler tonight. It felt grand, mainly because I had the belt tighter this time comapred to last Saturdays run. So problem solved, happy days. Thanks again.

Good stuff lads, I am going to wear a white Raheny top, the 'Raheny' green strip on the front may be covered by the no. though "no. 1547". I will also be wearing a pair of blue and yellow, Adidas DCM09 shorts.

My thinking was to hang back a small bit from the pacers as it may be a bit croweded round them. I will hopefully cross the start line ~20 secs or so after them. Then all I have to do is make sure I cross the finish line ahead of them - easy peasy! NOT!
