Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back a page or two to re-sync the thread and this will then show latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hi all, recently bought a new camper but the charge output from the lighter is 24v. My current charger only goes up to 20v with an output of 19v. Anyone know how I can get around this? My laptop is Toshiba.
    Thanks

I have a Toshiba too with the same issue. At worst you can charge when you are driving using an inverter (I know its not very efficient but it works). Normally I just plug it in when I am parked up with the 220v hook up.

Sorry forgot to ask what kind of a camper do you have that has a 24v output from the cigarette lighter?

Must be a light truck based one? I fitted a 2 to 12v transformer to a mate's for the same issue , to convert the charge going to the "house" to 12v . Bought it from Autelco in Tullamore.

A 24v to 12v dc-dc converter is one simple option, bear in mind that the dc-dc converter will have an efficiency of about 80% typically as will your laptop adapter so you get about 0.8 x 0.8 = 0.64 about 64% efficiency if you go that route. Also if the current draw is much less that the max figure for a dc-dc converter the efficiency will be much lower than 80%. Worth thinking about if you plan to be away from a power point. If you plan to be hooked up in a campsite all the time than thats all pretty irrelevant.

    Other options:

I would recommend a 24V inverter (24VDC in, 240VAC out) to which you connect a mains laptop charger (240VAC in, laptop-specific volts/current out).

People may argue about the inefficiency of using two devices to power one (and fair point if battery capacity is limited) but I think it is the simplest solution unless someone suggests something better.

option a; cut off the cigarette lighter plug and wire it direct to a 12v source (leisure battery)

    option b; http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=390220

make sure the ampage of the charger is equal or slightly lower than your laptop expects. There's also 10amp version of the 24v to 12v convertor if your laptop is a brute @ http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=390224

I'd try to avoid running laptops off an invertor the power loss will cane your battery in a matter of hours if the engine isn't running
