Using Android phone as internet tablet?

    I know this has been discussed here and elsewhere, but none of the answers worked for me, so posting again...

    Bought ZTE Blade (Orange San Francisco) and got it unlocked. It's running Android 2.1. I have mobile broadband midband from O2 (bill pay). I want to use that sim card (from the modem), put it in the new phone and use it as a portable internet tablet (net browsing, google voice, cabbage, etc.) Am not interested in making or receiveing conventional calls or texts on it.

    Rang O2 about it, they were iffy, saying the phone is not supported, I could be hit with extorsionate data charges, etc. They were suggesting that I should buy one of their voice/data plans, which I do not want to do.

    Could someone post the (O2) APN settings (and whatever else needs to be tweaked) if you got this going. My understanding is that I am not breaking the O2 T&C by doing this.

    These should be the same as the modem sim, they're from a nexus1, but i'm using them on my streak;

    Thanks gbob, sadly still no luck. Data connection (settings > wireless & networks > mobile networks > Data connection) goes into "Connection failed" after a second or two.

    Will try it tomorrow in an area with stronger signal, although where I live i get good enough signal on the modem.

    Am just wondering, the fact that the modem has to dial *99# to connect... that setting is not required anywhere on the phone?? Is it a different service? Will try contacting o2 again, in case they have to enable something on their end.

    If you go to settings, wireless & networks, mobile networks, access point names, menu, new APN, and insert the above settings, save, tick the "data enabled" box, you should be good to go, the old dial-up number went out with the dinosaurs:D

    Followed to the letter! I then go back to settings > wireless & networks > mobile networks > Data connection - Enable data connection ... device shows "turning on" for a second and then goes into "connection failed".

    Have tried all available network modes too, but makes no difference.

    Have also flashed to the original image (orange), thinking that the one from modaco could be the culprit, but still the same.

    Thanks again for getting back, will try again tomorrow and post the result.

    Changing APN to open.internet seems to have done the trick. Many thanks again gbob.

    I can confirm that open.internet is the APN for bill pay mobile broadband. I use this APN for my USB broadband router.

    Sorry, did you say Google Voice?
    Got something to share with us?

    Sadly no :o. Apologies, got ahead of myself. Got excited by the google voice integration into gmail on desktop and was hoping it would be available on android, being google product etc. Back to skype.
