Who does one go to to have a bad back looked at?

I'm in excruciating pain, and would like to see a professional. I'm assuming going to a GP would be a waste of €50? So who? A physio? A chiropractic? A hooker?

If someone would point me in the right direction I would be much appreciative.

Once had terrible spasm in me back, went to the doc, gave me antibiotics or painkillers (some sort of tablet) and I was right as rain!

Never wanked in that position again tho :p

Don't go to your GP, they'll just refer you to someone else. Ring a local physio or sports injury place and they'll be able to sort you.

A GP would refer you to a specialist. On the other hand, if you hang around outside the Beacon I'm sure you'll be swarmed by specialists.

Obviously we can't give you medical advice so the standard line of going to your GP is what you get

Howver from personal experience I got the best results from Physio, my problems were muscular, others get great results from Chiropractors as they have different issues

Depends on what is the cause of the problem, if you have an idea of that it might point you in a direction

Went to a sports physio once when I put my lower back out (and was getting regular back pain) and he a) beat the bolloicks out of my back (in a good way) a) gave me some good exercises to improve my posture which he said was causing the issue. One session cost 50 Euro at the time (about 5 or 6 years ago)

Depends on what's up with ya, but a physio or chiropractor would probably be better than a GP.

My younger brother went to pick up something this morning and had a spasm in his back. Had to ring me because he was stuck sideways and could bearly move.

Took him to a Physio at 11, physio spent half an hour doing acupuncture and laser treatment. He says its a lot better. (Gave him another appointment to finish the treatment to stop it reoccurring)

Now the downside to this is that the physio said he should go to the doctor to get a prescription for anti-inflammatories. (I had some at home anyway, so he didn't need to)

So its a bit retarded.. you go to the doctor, he prescribes you anti-inflammatories (for immediate relief) but does very little else. You go to a physio and he does half an hour of work on it, but can't prescribe you anti-inflammatories.

    Snookered really.

Chiropractor or sports therapist for a deep tissue does the job for me.

Pay a little chinese woman with tiny feet to walk on your back for an hour.

Don't go near a chiropracter, you might as well see a witch doctor!
Go to a real doctor and get a scan if neccesary.
I went to a chiropractor about a year ago (highly recommended by a friend). He done his thing and i woke up the next morning in what i can honestly describe as the worst agony i have ever experienced. A real doctor spotted a slipped disc. I spent a week flat on my back and at least a couple of months in severe discomfort untill it kinda fixed itself.
Doc basically said the chiropractor done it!

You'll need to see a GP to get a referral for an MRI scan. If it's excruciating as in, "I can barely move and even the most basic things make me want scream like a little girl", then it's likely a slipped disc. The GP can prescribe strong anti-inflammatories, opiate-based painkillers (yum) and sleeping tablets (wohoo).

You'll also need to go for an MRI to find out where the slipped disc(s) are and how severe it is and you'll also need to see a musculoskeletal physiotherapist for about six weeks to teach you how to manage this permanent condition.

GP is about €50, drugs are roughly another €50 and an MRI is about €300. Health insurance FTW.

If you go to a chiropractor you may as well just have a mate kick you in the back. If it's not bad enough to stop you from picking things up, getting out of bed or walk down the road, then just go straight to the musculoskeletal physio.

    Baby got bad back eh?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,213 ✭✭✭Mrmoe

Go to a doctor and they will probably refer you to a physio. I had a prolapsed disk at the beginning of the year, it was diagnosed by the doctor and referred to the physio. First week was just rest as I could barely move, after that 2 visits a week and I was starting to get better. It was pleasurable in the end as the physio was smoking hot:D

Chiropractor = waste of time. In my experience, short term relief, and a multitude of follow-ups to keep the cashflow going.

I now see an osteopath when I need to. Totally different approach, mostly deep tissue massage, small amount of manipulation at the end. Always works for me. But this is not for a slipped disc, more for a vertebrae popping out of position and trapping nerves and bruising muscles.

Bend your knees, not your back.

    Also, see a quack.

No need to thank me for this useful and helpful advice.

A bad back can be caused by any number of things.

    Trauma
    Genetic factors
    Strain
    Diet

When did the pain start, is it sharp or dull, skeletal or muscular.

I know people who went to a physio for ages and it turned out it was a slipped disc so didnt get sorted. I know people who went to a chiropracter and it was muscular so didnt get sorted. I know people who have gone to osteopaths but it was genetic so didnt get sorted.

The best bet would be to go to a GP to get a propper diagnosis. It is most likely to be a referal but that would most likely save you money in the long run.

best of luck. back pain is no joke

Don't go near a chiropractor. My mother was crippled by one after she went there with back pain. He then proceeded to ring her everyday telling her to come back for follow up treatment. Eventually my mothers GP rang him and threated legal action if he didn't stop the harassment.

Believe it or not a relative got great results for back pain through acupuncture.

Go to homestore and more and sit on their massage chairs they have there... free treatment you will be sorted

The same happened my gran the chiropractor damaged her, she was left in pain because of it .A bone mass index check thing (im not sure what the proper name is) should have been done before he went near her and he caused irreversible damage

Well this thread is no help at all! :)

I have no idea what I did to it, its been hurting since Saturday. If I'm sitting then its reasonably comfortable. If I'm standing its a little better. But moving from a seated to a standing position is unbearable, its possibly the worst pain I've ever experienced! It's definitely a muscle problem.

Well this thread is no help at all! :)

This thread should have been of some help, at the start you were considering a chiropractor as a possibly option, but if you have read the replies you should have realised that they are useless. Chiropractors are at worst dangerous pseudoscientists who could seriously damage you, at best they are just a waste of money. See a real health care professional and avoid their quackery. Same goes for acupuncture, reflexology, aromatherapy and any other so called alternative medicine.

Actually as someone who comes from the confines of a conventional medical background, I would not rule out a Chiropractor. Your G.P. will be of no use, conventional physiotherapy will also be of no use. Heat packs and interferential will do nothing for you. I've done a lot of serious weightlifting over the years and believe me I have sampled ever therapeutic approach with back pain.

The only one that's ever sorted me out has been the Chiropractor; unfortunately there are a lot of cowboys out there claiming to be Chiropractors so you have to be careful. Multiple visits should not be required, painful manipulations should not be performed or carried out. The difficulty is finding a truly skilled one and not a money grabber

When I had a particular bad injury a couple of years ago, I couldn't even straighten my spine. Nothing worked for me so I went to my first Chiropractor. I went once a week for 4 weeks, once a month for 6 months and that was it. Bingo! Sorted totally I was advised to go back yearly for a check up. I haven't been to one now in 4 years, so OP believe me when I tell you, I've tried everything and there is no bigger sceptic than me. The trick is in finding a good, genuine one amongst the cowboys. PM me if you need further help on this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

We'll stop here as it's getting medical now.

Remember OP, don't take anything above as advice. Every problem depends on various factors and what might have helped someone else might not work for you/may make it worse.
    See a GP.
    Thx.
