Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hey there,

I'm doing my thesis on some old family negatives and photos that Ive found lying around at home. They date from the early 1900's and are based on the social and cultural activities of a farming community. This farm has been a part of my family for 4 generations.
I am not very good with the academic side to photography and Im not quite sure how to approach this and what direction or topic to take from it
eg Thesis proposal, title, chapter headings, sub headings. If anyone out there could give me some ideas or any help to start me off it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

it boggles the mind .... you are doing a thesis on old family photos ?

what did you study ? academic side of photography would be about understanding lighting/exposure etc...not about some old family photos from the 1900's

is it a sociological examination of what is depicted in the photos, or is it an examination of the photos themselves?

Well you could start here? Current exhibition on the national archive is on Photography in the 'Big House'. Actually I'd say the National Photographic Archive would be a good point to start in general. And there's a good exhibition in the Gallery of Photography across the way too.

You could look at August Sander? Maybe look at the FSA photos? Although that *might* be stretching it a bit for context..

    Hope that helps!

Thanks for that, I posted this for my OH as he is under pressure and thought it might help to get some info off other people who have studied photography so I'll pass this information on to him.

PC Photo, obviously it will be more technical then that, but as Im not the one doing the course and he was asking me to help I thought I'd put something up so that he can have some ideas, I didn't really know how to word it, so I just looked at whats required in a thesis and posted for him.
