Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

ARW selection

    Hello all,

If one was to consider going for selection next year, has anyone any decent ideas on how to structure your training for 12 months in order to be in a position to pass.

I'm not talking about the 12 week training programme that's available. I'm more thinking about breaking the training into blocks that would build on one another and merge to give a high level of fitness. For example, building endurance for several months, then building strength, then moving onto hill training etc. I'm not entirely sure, but any ideas would be appreciated.

I know this has been done to death before and usually ends in a closed thread, so let's not go there again.

    Cheers,

    H

Check out the fitness forum. IIRC, Will Heffernan did some work with line grunts in the Marine Corp way back when.

Go tell him what they expect of you, there's a few from McKee in his gym ;)

assuming ARW selection is anything like UKSF selection (a fairly reasonable assumption imv...) you'll need a combination of two dispirate physical fitness types - a 'short spurt' capability (think of a rapid, violent attack over a short distance with lots of equipment, weapons, ammunition and Method of Entry gear, primarily focusing on upper body strength), a 'long drag' capability - carrying a GBFO bergen a bloody long way, over rough, unmarked terrain, as quickly as you can.

you'll need obsvervation skills, good weapon handling skills, excellent navigation skills, and you'll need to be able to demonstrate those skills in conjunction with the physical abilities - to watch the mind-numbingly boring video and remember its contents after marching 45 miles on your own with 90lbs of kit and getting to the RV exactly on time, all in the dark, when its sleeting, and then laying in a section attack.

From a pure physical standpoint You would need to 'train' all 3 energy systems that your body has. ie the ATP,Anaerobic and Aerobic systems.

How do you mean? What would this mean in real terms? Would you start with long gentle runs and build up to running at speed or what?

Basically your body switches between the 3 depending on what you are doing .. for example the ATp basically is used for quick powerfull movement like sprinting, fighting, etc it lasts maybe 30/40 seconds. your aerobic system uses oxygen and kicks in after about 5 mins.. for distance running etc the more you use it the more efficient you body becomes at using the oxygen.

In short what im saying is that your training has to be complete and cover all areas becuase whats the point in being able to run a marathon in a decent time if you cant carry a man for 200m's at pace.

Contact the Unit and ask to speak to someone about training for Selection.

You'll get a better answer off them than on here.

Another bullsh*t internet type reply from somebody who knows f*ck all about it other than what they read in the tabloid press...

Turn up with decent fitness levels, avoid injury (the no 1 RTU) and demonstrate a mental ability to be f*cked about and you'll have a chance. They will train you to be the rest.

As previously said talk to a PTI. Lads in McKee Barracks Gym or DFTC Gym will be more than willing to help.

Contact the ARW themselves requesting information about it, they won't bite you...until selection that is :)

Show up for the pre-training which takes about a month or so before the main event.

Talk to others who have attemped it before & see if they have any tips for you. But always trust your own instincts TBH.

Put yourself forward for all the tactical training in your unit, the more chance you get to practice your drills the better. Or if you're not in a that type of unit request to go TD to units that do for Tac Ex's.

Also see if you can get a training buddy, someone who is looking to attempt selection at the same time & train together. Always nice to have a bit of competition or constructive criticism from someone else.

    Best of luck.

It is to be expected when you come on an internet bulletin board asking advice about special forces selection....
