Grant Refusal--HELP

Got a letter today from Meath CoCo refusing my grant application on the basis of "progression". I have been refused as this is my second Masters hence not a progression in their eyes!

I have never received a grant before as I have not been eligible , I completed my 1st Masters in 09 this was a 2 year course in which I funded myself. The fees were substantial to say the least and I am still paying off the loan from last Masters hence I was delighted to apply under Independent Mature Student this year thinking I would be helped out in some way.

The Masters I have applied to do now is a very specialised section of my original Masters, there are jobs out there (in which my 1st Masters there are not) so in my eyes this is the only way to move forward at the moment. I have been working in retail the last year and doing my best to gain some form of work experience or get on a graduate programme to no avail....

Has anyone out there had a similar experience, has anyone managed to appeal on the grounds of progression and win their case? Or is it simply as open and shut as I will only get a grant if I do a phd and no chance for this masters? Any advice would be helpful as at this stage I am dreading how I will manage to do my course yet keep up work in order to fund myself..

There is 0% chance you will win this case so I'd just accept it and look at doing a Phd.

Is it unjust? Certainly, but this is Irish politics we're dealing with.

    All the best,

Similar situation. Can't hurt to appeal. The worst they can do is say no again!

getting a second masters is not progression for the purposes of the grant scheme. no more than repeating 2nd year would be progress.

    How is it unjust????

You hear every second (okay every person) complain about Govt waste of money and when a rule is in place that basically says - "it's not financially sensible to pay for you to be educated to the level you are already at - even if we didn't pay for it the first time..."

Simple logic in trying to get bang for public buck.

i must agree i dont see how it is unfair or unjust. the extension of the logic in paying for a second masters is that after a short time the eternal students would be on to their 3rd,4th,5th masters at the expense of taxpayers............

I think I must have misread the thread -- I don't believe you should receive funding for duplicate qualifications.

The current funding system is mostly progressive, if not woefully implemented.
