Hi, I'm thinking of buying a car, and I'd rather just buy with a card if possible. What's the upper limit on a purchase via chip and pin thing?

1500e a day on a laser card. Sometimes it will allow more if you put through two separate transactions. A lot of dealerships don't like card payments due to transaction fees, however the fee to them is 40 cent on a laser up to previously mentioned limits, so they may not have an issue with laser.
