'm working on metal halide floodlighting atm

suitable for son\ metal halide control gear

you're correct in your assumption although i don't know too much

venture lighting do a 400 watt metal halide lamp that has du as part of its code which means dual. this will work with either ballast and gives off the white light you require. a lot of the area floods on the market have a dual ballast that will do both types of lamp but thorn are usually specific to one type in there fittings.

is the code on the lamp not hps-t and can you confirm the code on the fitting as i cant find it in the thorn catalogue

is there much difference in heat output between the sodium and MH bulbs?

are the sodium fittings themselves actually suitable in all cases

    (assuming the lamp) is

I think I can use Philips HPI-T Plus...mentions both MH and SON Gear. Any cheaper options?? Think they come in at €30-35 per bulb!

i can get you a price on the venture lamp, but it will be tuesday before i can ring the supplier. its easy to get caught out with mixing differant lamps and balasts, certain types work regardless but others have to be like for like. tbh i think phillips is the type that will only work with phillips gear but it will be tuesday before i could confirm that.
we keep a lot of ballasts, ignitors and capcitors in our place and sometimes its easier to swap out the ballast, this also means in the future the cost of replacing the lamp would be less cause its not so specialised.

yes but i think its with only phillips ballast, i could be wrong but we get this alot in our place so ied have to ask the lad in the job whos a ballast/lighting expert. i could give the thorn rep a bell on tueday but i need part numbers and so far i can only find a refferance for that fitting in french???.
i remeber being told that if you have a fitting with phillips gear ,a phillips lamp will only work. so if you put in an osram or ge lamp it wont work, im unsure if this works in reverse, im sure a phillips lamp will work in other manufacturers gear but not so sure when it comes to the lamp you mentioned.

    Cheers,

if you could find out that would be great. Thats all that is on the floodlights. (we have 4 of them so getting new ones would be pain)

yes and no. depends on the make. we do ballasts that do both but a lot of fittings available from mainstream manufacturers keep there gear specific.

so some fittings will take either bulb

and some fittings wont -and you have to use the 'dual' bulb is that it?

does metal halide need a glass front-a lot of the cheap sodiums are plastic front?

yes some fittings will take either lamp. and to the best of my knowledge the only way of using a metal halide lamp with son only fitting is with the dual bulb or change out the ballast.
ive only seen polycarbonate covers on 70 watt fittings and ive never installed them so i wouldnt be sure about there operating temp.
