Dog pees when excited

    Hey all.

Have a wee stray dog me and the girlfriend took in about six months ago. Love her to bits, and she's awesome.
However, ever since she wandered into our apartment, she's had a habit of peeing whenever she's excited... however, it's only certain types of excitement. Main one is that whenever me or the gf come home from being out, she'll pee within 15-20 seconds. Or if someone else comes in she'll do the same.

This was fine until recently when we moved apartment, as the dog was trained to run out onto the balcony and pee. This new apartment however... the neighbours underneath complained about the dog peeing so we've had to ban her from there. We're trying to litter train her inside, but it's very hit and miss. If we're here she might pee in the litter tray, but left alone she never really does.

Anyone have any advice on how to calm her down or train her?

when you or the gf come in from work etc try and not make a fuss over her for about 5 mins untill she calms down a bit to prevent the pee as in totally ignore her.this should be done with any dog regardless of if they pee or not because al dogs get a bit excited when there owners come home and sometimes you have to rush in and back out for whatever reason so its best to ignore her for a few mins

What methods have you been using for toilet training?

To be honest, when she goes into her litter tray and pees, she gets petted and praised, if she pees on the floor she gets lifted in and then praised. I'm not the main trainer per se, it's mainly the gf who does it. She's just better.

Have a look at some of the threads on this forum on toilet training and crate training, there is a lot of information on it. Crate training won't work for you if you have to leave the dog alone for more than about 4 hours during the day though if you both work, unless someone can come home at lunch to let the dog out to the toilet.

If you are going to keep the way you are doing you are going to have to find some way of confining the dog to a small area or 1 room until she figures it out. When she goes in the right place clean it up immediately, they won't use an area for a toilet if it's soiled. When she goes in the wrong place clean it up immediately and thoughly so she can't get a scent of it and go again in the same place. Don't let her see you clean up when she goes in the wrong place.

Sorry, can you explain this please? The dog won't use a solied area to go, but if she goes in the wrong place, clean it because she will try and go there again? I don't understand

Also, why can't the dog see you cleaning the pee?

    Genuine questions by the way!

If the dog can smell traces of urine it will pee in the same place as they will think that's the toilet, however if there is big pile of muck or puddle of wee where they want to go they aren't going to stand in it to go there again so will find somewhere else.

If the dog sees that you are going to clean up its mess if it just goes where ever it feels like it, it isn't going to worry about keeping its house clean as thats your job ;) It's different if the mess just disappears while it's in another room as it doesn't connect you to the mess disappearing.

The best thing to use to clean it up is biological washing liquid. The enzymes will destroy the ammonia which is what gives wee its smell. Never use bleach because that contains ammonia.
