yes, you are born what you are, and transgender people are born the gender they identify with.

    condescending much?

In everything being equal, no! Otherwise, to drag myself down to the level of the masses and go from there, yes, but not to often remembering a quote very fitting of AH.

Because you were reliably informed. If the person was born a man would you refer to that person as him?

I personally would have very little option but to work with what seemed most obvious. Personally, I would hold that they are the gender that they were born with in a modified body. This isn't very pragmatic to use in speech.

If one really wanted to be strict about it one could not use third-person pronouns.

But you advised earlier you were very defines, what's on the birth cert, would full sight of a transgender's psychologist's notes sway you?

The birth cert is an account of the situation at the birth of the child. Link234 would have me believe that despite the child being born male, they are actually female inside in a male to female modification (I would hold this to be in appearance alone). I can't see this being too reasonable in practice.

I would need to know the criterion that they would be using to establish this. If the criterion was suspect, one would also question the findings.

Many fields of learning, including anthropology and sociology as far as I am aware would encourage the viewpoint that sex and gender are two different things. As I would see it such a distinction is based purely on human constructs rather than anything else.

so guys, is your index finger longer than your ring finger? if so, you might be a transsexual. smile.gif

So all guys who have a longer index finger than ring finger are transsexuals even if they actually don't want to change their gender?

Sounds fairly absurd to me. One can only really transition if they want to, and if they don't transition they can hardly be referred to as transsexuals.

Are homosexuals that don't act on it homosexuals?

A more prudent analogy would be homosexuals who act in all means as heterosexuals, including sexually.

I'd doubt that they were homosexual, at the most they would be bisexual.

As for sexuality, I'm not convinced that it is biologically determined. That's another thread though.

but in the case of gender testing in sports (a deplorable practice if you ask me) there are examples of women failing tests, being declared male and bring stripped of their awards. Santhi Soundarajan is an example. by the standards of the professional panel who carried out this test, her birth cert was wrong. so do you take the birth cert as fact or do you accept that it can be fallible?

you know that during hormone replacement therapy, the body changes and becomes female in every capacity bar reproductive

also jakkass, you seemed to have overlooked this post

Oh look, it's this thread again.

Think I'll go start a thread about religion, one about the dole being too high and one about taxi drivers being racist. And sure, nobody has started an abortion thread in ages.

Just start a combined one about religious, racist taxi drivers getting so much dole money that they spend it all on abortions.

In my opinion, the only reason you would call a transgender woman "him" is to irritate them.
For all intent and purposes, they are female.
    Think like a woman,
    Act like one,
    Dress like one,
    Use womens bathrooms...

after all that why would it have any use to call them male?

I can liken this argument to changing your name...

Imagine you have a really awful name, lets say 'Stupid-Face'.
Its on your birth Cert, maybe you were brought up to use it, but you never accepted it, and instead tell people your name was Jim.
Everyone then knows you as Jim, you feel this is your name, you get your name legally changed to Jim and it feels right, it is your identity you can finally be happy with.
Then some idiot finds out and keeps calling you 'Stupid-face'.

Is this fair? Shouldn't you be able to change your name when you were given one so very wrong?
so shouldn't you be allowed to change gender in the same way if your born with the wrong one.

Agreed, pointless circular reasoning continually going no where. Another thread for the lock. Not quite the same as last night. Atleast people took something from it.

Links, would you stop your crusade to educate people of AH on trans-gender.

If people don't agree with your views and won't accept a trans male to female as a woman then thats tough. A long winded opening post is probably not going to change their views on the world and what they think is the natural order.

Learn to pick your battles and know when to accept your defeats.

On left hand they are both the same size, on right hand ring finger is slightly bigger than index. Should I be worried? :pac:
    Links234 wrote:

Then it isn't very convincing evidence is it? If people in this situation may not be transsexual, then it isn't very good evidence that people who are male to female transsexuals have a bigger index finger than ring finger.

Pretty much what it comes down to is:
Most guys have a bigger ring finger than index finger. And some guys who have a bigger index finger than ring finger go on to change their appearance.

Is there anything else I need to know before I read these links?

Do you believe in human diversity beyond what you read in the bible? 6 billion + genetic mutations isn't really something that book encompassed.

Yes, your index finger is growing as you get older. Perhaps you need to see a specialist to shorten your index finger or just chop it off as you may have gender issues down the line ;):pac:
