Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back a page or two to re-sync the thread and this will then show latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

No, they're not JUST laptop hard drives. They have the same form factor (2.5" SATA) but they have a vendor-specific firmware loaded onto them so that the console can detect and use it. Without this specific hardware the console will either not be able to detect it, or will detect it but treat it like a regular memory stick/external hard drive (i.e. only 16GB will be usable).

There is a way to get this firmware onto the drives (HDDhackr) but you need to buy a specific model of hard drive (a model that Microsoft are either using for the current drives or have used in the past so it's firmware could be dumped).

You cannot just buy any old drive and expect it to work, your comment was misleading.

I know that already its a certain drive with special firmware loaded onto it
a simple google search will tell you that.
but it basically is a 2.5" sata laptop hdd.
the op wasn't asking about creating a hdd for his 360 he was asking about using his old hd in a new 360.
i don't see how it was misleading
