have a dog in the same situation we got him at year from the dspca at one year old he had never been socialised! first step was trraining classes they worked well he socialised with the dogs there, but once out for a walk and it was new dogs it would be pull and growl and if a dog off the lead approached him he would get a fright and snap(never did harm , just jelously)

next step dog park! up to cabinteely dog park off the lead and happy as anything no snapping no growling just sniffing and hello!

and third step only got this last week but the best investment we have made so far on him was a Halti dog collar unbeliveable control no growling no stress on the lead just a delight to walk now!!

dog parks are good for socailising , we were very nervous at first incase he snapped at a dog but we got in first then other people arrived and he was fine!
our guy sounds just like that he sits he stays , we also bring a few treats on the walk and once we see a dog(hopefully before him) we get him to sit and show him the treatr and wait till the dog walks past!
and lots of praise now when hes on the halti and doesnt growl or pull for the other dog! weve had him for over a year and its getting better and better daily!!

    hope this helps!

I think wat u said above "im scared to train him around other dogs" is the problem. if ur guy sences that u are afraid u are sending him bad vibes which is causing him to react this way with dogs. Are u when passing other dogs reacting by tightening ur grip on his lead. If so dont this is giving him the wrong message, u should be keeping the lead lose. I would deffo be getting him to classes as walks are supposed to be a enjoyable occasion for both of u.

We have the same problem with our dog and she is very well socialised, goes to doggy day care one day a week and generally gets to meet up with friends dogs at the weekend and she is very playful and friendly with dogs she gets to interact with. The thing is she only behaves aggressive towards other dogs who are on leash, other dogs off leash no problem at all.

Have tried everything sophie1234 has outlined, i.e using treats to distract her and then rewarding her if she doesnt react, some days it works others it doesnt.

If she gets to meet the other dog she is fine, has a sniff, wag of her stump and off we go without any bad reaction but as she's a Rottie not everyone wants to let her meet their dog. She is a rescue and was abandoned at quite a young age so maybe some of her development has been stunted

Talking to a dog trainer about it who reckons the problem could be that she is fearful of other dogs on leash and she reacts aggressively to try scare off what she's afraid of.

brilou23 we have a trainer come to visit us this week to try and help us out, will let you know how we get on and pass on any advice that might help
