Posts which discussed issues relating to workmanship have been separated out to here

The original post started after this line

Just wondering what way people are dealing with a 150mm cavity,
    • closing it around doors and windows
    • also how are people fairing out with cills, are they sitting on the outer leaf only
Just on average how much more expensive are the larger wall ties

    Cheers

I'm using some of the xtratherm cavity closer. I think it'll be more useful for ensuring air tightness. I've heard of lads just leaving the insulation exposed right out to the ope. closer blocks are no benefit with the wider cavity.
my cills are on outer leaf only, just make sure insulation is right up underneath cill to support it when fitting. my windows are not large anyway so won't really be much weight on them. longer wall ties are not really much more expensive but not all providers stock them. you'll use more but its small cost compared to other things..

For closing cavities Kingspan have a product specifically to close around openings see http://www.insulation.kingspan.com/uk/thermabate.htm

The product manual has detailing for these areas although it seems to be aimed at British market given some of the details. It looks a fool proof product to me and it can be joined to whatever cavity width required. The problem is hardware stores wont have it in stock so you will have to get them to order it in. I don't think its overly expensive though.

I'm using the xtratherm ones myself. 200mm cavity, but inside wall is returned to make it 135mm at windows and doors, so I've to trim 5mm off a 140mm closer.
They work out around just shy of €20 a 3mtr length.
